If you plan on getting into this and want variety, some dark green parachute cord would look stealthier.

Yeah, I was going to suggest paracord. It's not hard to weave it into a good strap: http://www.tacticalintelligence.net/blog/slatts-rescue-belt.htm or http://chubbysurvivalist.com/2009/07/31/braided-survival-belt-with-550-mil-spec-paracord/ would serve as a base pretty well.

The strap here is sort of the Home Depot Artist & Artisan silk cord strap, but the huge knots at the camera make it look like it'll get in the way...

Alternatively, maritime knots

Use marline, which is cord infused with tar. Subjects will be stunned by the smell and you'll get interesting facial expressions while ruining all of your shirt collars. Very nautical, though.

Sweet. I'm always keeping an eye out for cool stuff to make straps and re-covers...Belts, purse straps, anything ANYTHING with a good, solid clip on it...

I might try something with some parachute cord and rip-stop i have around...
