I`m a lucky man. Recently bought a Leica M6 0.85 with a Summicron 50mm from the classified section of the rangerfinderforum. The Summicron was old and we agreed upon the price - 1100 Euros. I transfered the money and the seller confirmed that he had received the money.
The same week a bought a M3 from Spain trough the Leica forum. This item used under a week to get here (Sweeden to be precise, cause I was there on my winter holiday) Living in Norway the rest of the year.
Anyway, the M6 and Cron didnt came. I asked the seller and he said the package was on its way - but the weather conditions in Italy was bad so it could take som time. The seller had delivered the package the 23 of December. Finally, yesterday the package had arrived.
I was no longer in Sweeden and had to drive from Norway to Sweeden to collect.
I opened the box... and in it was this...:
It didnt look much like the Leica M6 with a Summicron to me:
I sent the seller a (not so nice) email, and he replied with eh.. suprice.. - and said that he for sure had packed the M6 and Cron in that box, with a nice box as well.
There are offcourse 3 options here.
1) The seller didnt at all send me the M6 and cron.
2) An itialian post employee snatch the item and packed down a pair of cords and som nuts and bolts
3) I`m the criminal and wants to get both the M6 AND my money back.
Lets look over the options. If the seller wanted to scam me, which is the best way to do it? Dont send the item at all or blame it on me or the postal service. IF the italian post have stolen the M6 isnt it more likely for them to just let the package disapear? Surely, on occasion, som packages is beeing lost?
Well, I know i have paid for the M6 and Summicron, without getting any.
Advice most welcome.

Did either party have insurance on camera/lens. What are the serial numbers for the items in question.

Sorry to hear that your buying experience on RFF was not a good one. Please report it to Stephen or one of the moderators and if appropriate, have them post the name/identity of the seller. If memory serves correct, it is not the first time a RFF seller from Italy (may not be the same person) has swindled a few other members. However, the (multiple) buyers of the same camera (that did not exist) were able to piece together enough information to obtain refunds etc.
Good luck. I hope you're able to get your money back.

This is just horrible. I have not been a RFF user for long but It seems like there have been a lot scams and scares recently.

Shoot.
That's terrible. Report it to someone who can hopefully help track it down, demand your money back.

That sucks! I severely doubt the postal office stole your goods. They'd just take the whole package and be done with it.
Did the box have the Sellers return address on it? Was it the same box that they put in the mail?
The seller could have sent the wrong shipment to you. Someone in customs or the Post Office could have swapped it out, and put the box back in place so it could be tracked.
The Italian Post Office has a horrible reputation with Sellers on Ebay. Many refuse to ship to Italy.
Or you could have been scammed by the seller. Is he a regular Posting member, or a "zero-Post, just registered".
This is not the only complaint/scam on the RFF classifieds. Myself, I just bought a LNIB Leica M8 and the seller put extra books and filters into the box with the camera, not mentioned in the sale.

So sorry to hear this. It will make me think twice about buying from the classifieds here.

Yay! Cameras! 🙈🙉🙊┌( ಠ_ಠ)┘ [◉"]
I only purchased here once - from a nice gent in Malaysia - and it was a good experience. This definitely gives me pause...
I hope you can get it sorted out. Best of luck.

this reminds me of the d3 scam that happened to someone when d3 first came out. the seller packed a plastic camera instead of a d3. o-o

How did you pay? Paypal is safer as you have a way to run after the seller.

Use common sense, ask for reference elsewhere and especially with new members

FYI: I don't believe that Ken (aka monochromejrnl) was singling out Italians as criminals but mentioned them because, if you read the original post, the box that was supposed to contain the M6 0.85 & 'cron came from (or went through) Italy.

It would be unfortunate to paint everyone here with the same brush from one bad experience. I bought my first Leica from a member on the RangeFinderForum. I'm sure many others have had positive experiences in their transactions on the RangeFinderForum.

I sold a Nikkor lens on eBay to a buyer in Italy recently. He absolutely insisted on FedEx insured/tracked delivery and paid a small fortune for it. He told me that was the only way to reliably get goods back and forth. I send full insurance/tracking information when I ship so he had a JPEG of the scanned insurance form and the tracking number in case anything went wrong but still he was relieved when it arrived.

Stuff like that scare the begeezus out of me.
I guess the higher the price, the more flies are drawn.
Postal service is so bad in my area (thankfully?) that I too insist on NOT using it - but pay a premium for it.
I really hope things get straightened out.
Peace.

I feel for you. My M6 is en route from a private ebay seller in Belgium to Italy and this thread is the last thing I want to read now...
I hope you'll set the things at ease with your seller. I agree with others, Paypal gives you some more chance to get your money back.
The overall set up of this story is weird.
