My Nikon DSLR merry-go-round

My first Nikon was an FTn Photomic back in the early 70s. From there I bought several more F's and F2's over the years, used them for news work and had zero problems with any of them. You could drive nails with them and they worked flawlessly, with occasional adjustments to the shutters. Of course, I destroyed a couple of them on assignments but that was not the camera's fault. Then I bought an FM and the trouble started. I should have known better, considering my luck with the FM, but I bought one of the first batch of F3's available in the US. Motor drive and all. It was the most unreliable camera I've ever owned. Eventually I went to Canons and stuck with them as I transitioned into digital.

Although I had this bad experience in the past, I bought a used D800 last year to do a project. I had been using Fujis for about 4 years prior to that and I was very satisfied with the cameras and the images. After using the D800 for a time, I found myself falling in love with DSLRs and Nikons again. Since I had gotten tired of EVFs it was really nice to look through pentaprisms again. I've now bought several used Nikon DSLR bodies and lenses (and built up a balance on my credit card) and I'm perfectly happy with them all. My favorite? The venerable old D700. I picked mine up in "like new" condition with less than 300 shutter clicks. Cheap. It's heavy and bulky and it reminds me of the F2 in its build. And even though it's only 12mp, those big fat megapixels produce beautiful files. Colors are excellent and grey tones are sweet. The files respond beautifully to minor Lightroom adjustments. Overall, the Nikon thing has been a very pleasant experience.
