My Noctilux Diary

Actually my girlfriend just finished a course, and is buying things she needs to develop our own B/W films. She also chose the bathroom.

These days I'm loading my TC-1 with Tri-X 400, and taking snapshots like...like I'm using a digital camera. I'm "cumulating rolls of film" for her first self-film-development.

And since we got the Nikon Coolscan 5000ED film scanner ourselves, from now on we can just do the B/W totally on our own.

Can't wait.

like that much. It is the reason that I want abandon digital 😀 post more film pictures when you can.
 
The Noct on film vs. digital: In addition to the basic crop factor and DOF impacts, another factor is the loss of vignetting due to that cropping of the image. A lot of us like this aspect of the Noct's signature and rue its loss when shooting digital.

Cam, a lot of us have makeshift "darkrooms". I use the kitchen, hanging my wet films from a couple of hooks in the ceiling. I have to do it on a Friday night or Saturday night after my wife has finished in there. Other times there's too much traffic. Works fine, though.

This is one of those shots that I'm after. So if you don't like it, you'll probably understand why I spent so much money on a lens that is "flawed" in your eyes.

There was almost no light at all at the scene. The two windlows were dark yellow even with the lights coming out of them. I deliberately lengthened the exposure time. (I think the result should be different from deliberately shaking the camera.)

And I like what I see.

The TC-1 is my favorite point-&-shoot film camera. I've tried Contax T3, Natura Black F1.9, Leica CM, Rollei 35S, Olympus u2 & LT-1, etc., and TC-1 is my king.

AND, due to the "too small max aperture @ f3.5", yes, now I found that the neopan1600 is a better companian for the TC-1 than the Tri-X 400.

Faster to shoot, and more stealth than an RF.

We should start a thread for "TC-1 B/W".😎

I notice that your Noctilux front focuses a little on full aperture. However, this is normal! You should be aware of it. Ideally, a Notcilux will focus on the nose tip at aperture 1,0 and then widen and travel backwards - to the eyes, when stopped down.

Wow! Thanks, Olsen. I'll borrow a "meter table" (I don't know how to say it in English) and check it out. 😎
 
Next time someone sees my photos, and complains that this lens is not worth it, I should just direct him to you guys' websites, maddoc, urban_alchemist, and of course, Ned's thread.

I don't know how far away I am, to "there", you know, but I'll keep walking.

With the camera around my neck.

Actually the ideal would be for the focus point to remain on the same point as the lens is stopped down. But I know what you're saying - then it wouldn't be a Noctilux! 😀
 
Speaking of night shooting w/the TC-1, & not to go off-topic too much, but have either of you guys (referring to urban_alchemist) noticed your TC-1's focus assist light turning on even when the flash is turned off (according to the manual, this shouldn't be happening)?

@ Double Negative: Thanks for your support. I find it truly strange how much vitriol the lense (and the photos taken with it) engender. There are SO many shots I would not have been able to capture without the Noctilux and Ultra-High ISO film (think pushed 800Z or Neopan 1600).

@furcafe: Sorry to disappoint, but I can't say I've noticed. This is, however, not to say it doesn't happen...

Anyway, I know that the most common use for a Noctilux, is shooting our dogs, so here's living up to the stereotype. I give you: The Monster!

What is there to get? I've seen you use this lens to excellent effect before, but not in these pics. Isn't it at least possible in this case that the emotional connection you have with these photos simply didn't make it to the print for the rest of us to see?

Harleys and Noctiluxes, now that's a perfect combination. Both have magical holds on their owner's imaginations, but their properties can't be demonstrated effectively to the world of science or logic.

At least the Noctilux is rare, and quiet and doesn't plug the back roads of New England with groups of slow riders wearing ass-less chaps. 😀
