Roland,

Are your sure that is taken with a Noctilux?

Exif says:
Camera Model: Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II
Image Date: 2006:05:18 07:49:04
Focal Length: 150.0mm
Exposure Time: 0.017 s (1/60)
Aperture: f/2.8

Rather strange Noctilux.. ;)

Matt, the first portrait, very good !! If you happen to have some shots taken with the Noct, please post them !

Cheers,

Gabor

I don't own this lens yet. I hope to get it soon. I'm looking at the Nokton f1.1 as well. The Nocti is definitely so much different from the Nokton. I will post when they are ready. Thanks Maddoc.

Hello Noctilux Experts! I never had any particular interest for the Noctilux until recently when I noticed one locally. I now need your advice on the price.

It is the 1st version (E58) with hood and both caps for sale at US$3,500. The glass is perfect, it is 6-bit coded but the barrel has heavy signs of use, is it a fair price?

Actually, it might have already been sold to a member of this forum.....

The first version has the advantage of E58 filter size but is older, the coatings - may - have been improved over the time.

Regarding heavy signs of use, I would offer $3.300 and calculate a trip to Leica (or some other good technician) to have it checked. Even when prices were still much higher last year, some people picked up a Noctilux because of heavy signs of wear (and missing box, pouch etc.) for much less than $3.000.

Gabor,

Thanks for the advice, I think I'll stick with the Nokton for a while anyway!

I like this thread a lot. Thanks for posting your pictures and experiences. Very spontaneous results and opinions yet organized in terms of presentation and collecting of meaningful thoughts.

When I first got my lens, I just put it on the R-D1 and started shooting randomly, taking more of a "gunshot" approach through tiral and error. I'm not sure if this link will work, but I have a few of my pictures here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/21079345@N05/sets/72157607048618276/

Not all of them shot wide open, and not a necessity since I just liked the fact that I could carry this one lens and use it literally day and night.

I look forward to following this thread.

Edmund
Hi Edmund, I browsed through your flickr site mentioned above. There are some lovely images there. There are no dark corners in your images that I have seen in other peoples' images using this lens. Is that because your RD-1 sensor converts the 50mm to something like a 75mm,. Am I on the right track here?

I find I like using and get more images I like with the Noctilux and B&W film. If I could only have one camera and lens it would be the MP and Noctilux.

Here is a couple from Milan:

the lady on the bike is a wonderful photo - a fav !

This was shot with the Nokton 50mm f/1.1. I think it is at least a very good alternative to the Noctilux. Shot wide open, full frame printed. TriX, printed on Ilford MGIV.

I have done some research on the noctilux and the nokton. I'm no expert but they seem to be totally different lenses. I had a Canon f1.2 50mm lens and its a gem. the nokton looks superb and precise Erik. lovely processing too. Gabor, I like your last photo, was that a timed exposure? I had a few looks at the nokton and noctilux. I ended up getting a second noctiluk after selling all my digital gear - drastic I know, here are a few noctilux images at regular aperture and wide open. I'm inexperienced with this lens - its not easy at first to use, but I know I am going to use it as a main lens. Under normal apertures it performs beautifully.
This one is taken on neopan100asa at f4 in natural window-light...

more to come

Yes, the Nokton and the Noctilux are very different indeed. I really like the Nokton because it has almost no noticeable light fall off in the edges.

Erik.

Helen, Matt, thank you !! :) The one shot of the construction place was 1/90s f/1.0 (from memory).

Erik, I totally agree. They are different lenses and the Nokton for sure is better corrected than the Noctilux. Still, my favorite is the Noctilux despite all its flaws ... :);)

Matt, the portrait is very nice !
