That is an interesting article. It raises some thought provoking questions about expectations versus the realities of a career that is now overcrowded. It would be interesting to have heard the management side of the argument. I shouldn't be surprised to find there's a book in there.

Congrats, David. Nice work. I especially like the images of the pilot on a bus and the sleeping pilot. They really tell the story of how all the golden age of flight glamour is long, long gone.

I got a real good look at this subject recently on a long trip to and around Europe. I flew everything from American Airlines to EasyJet, and ended up thinking it was time to do some ground trasnsportation. Flying's just no fun anymore. Between the TSA and the airlines themselves, it's just too arduous.

This is proof that photos work best when there is a story to tell! (Well, there are exceptions.) This is an interesting social commentary, well done.

There are other occupations where the "glamour" has gone. Commercial photography? Journalism?

I think there are a LOT of careers who's glamour has left the building. Journalism, especially photojournalism, comes to mind.

As far as technical details, the images were captured over the course of two years, and I shot a Leica M6, Nikon D2X, 5DmkII, and X100. I used Nik SilverEfex Pro 2 to try to make the look consistent across the images.

You mention the race to the bottom in your article, and I think that race to the bottom has happened for the past 40 years, across America. It's a part of our everyday society now, as we are all racing to the bottom. The airline industry is not insulated from the general trends we're all facing.

Your photos are really well done, and though you said the words were difficult--they are really nice.
