My Slides from the 90's

Yeap, i started the sorting out.



This is a picture from my second trip to Sandorini. Camera is the Canon EOS-5 and film the usual suspect (Kodak Ektachrome Elite).

It has generated some interest in the house. The kids had no idea what this outdated piece of machinery is doing. They thouroghly enjoyed the slideshow though - even though some slides were shown upside down 😆

I have a tiny slide viewer "Sawyer's Pana-Vue V", works like a charm with a good source of white light, it makes the contact with each slide almost intimate.

PS it's always a pleasure to come back to this thread, and I see you have plenty more!

After the end of WWII, funding became available via the Marshall plan to rebuild cities/villages affected by the war. Between 1945 and 1952 all residents from the village my dad grew up migrated from the mountain area of Jannina to the more fertile valley. This is the school built back in the late 1940's, my dad went here during the last years of primary school. Notice - there are only two classrooms, back then the pupils in years 1 until 4 were in one classoom with a teacher and years 5 and 6 in another. In rural areas like this - if you were not going to continue with your high school studies, you were doing Year 6 twice (!) back in the 1940's and '50s.

So, this is the“New Bizani” village, I have also pictures from the old village that I will scan and post at some point.

This used to be our playground during summer months, we used to play football here and also hide and seek. I took this picture in August 1996 with my Praktica. I am not sure how this building is being used nowadays. It was a GP surgery for a while and a village hall later on but I don't know whether they use it any more.

That's the one, yes. The village has only one main road so if you go to street view and walk around you can see:

The school but as you can see it from the street


If you keep walking you can see my uncle and my aunt coming home from shopping


The village Mayor getting dressed in the garden



My cousin going to work



And finally this is a small view of my father's house, this is where I spent most of my summer holidays as I child together with my family and I miss it dearly. On this patch of land visible I took the picture in post #59, if you rotate the camera the other way you will see the view.

Boy, things have changed in the last 25 years...

Images taken of past partners can be a minefield. Part of us wants to share them, not only with the "exes" but the world, but principle stops us. My partner has been with me since 1997 when we met in Malaysia, but steadfastly refuses to let me use any of our "personal" images for anything other a print of my best one on our study room wall. I respect this rule as a basic principle in your relationship. And it has kept me honest.

Oddly, we also have a "rule" that I won't post any images of our cats or my cats, even the long-deceased ones. No rational reason for this, only a quirk. But a rule I respect. At least it saves me having to scan and post-process some 10,000 negatives...

Somewhat self centeredly, I only post images of people when they are strangers, subjects of street photography. As such, they have been taken in public and are not subject to an expectation of privacy.

On the other hand, I never post images of people I know, out of respect for their privacy, and mine. Maintaining a certain level of online anonymity is important to me, and posting images of people I know may compromise this. In relation to my persona as Archiver, I never post images from my work, lest they be by some small chance recognized. Not sure about pets, but they are much harder to identify, haha.
