My SLR Stinks

I bought an old printer once off of ebay - which absolutely reeked of tobacco smoke. So I decided to store it in the garage. Two days later I brought it inside to print with and it didn't smell like anything. I'm guessing it had something to do with the heat in the garage during the summer, but it is a mystery.

Try activated carbon. You can buy it at pet stores. It is used for filtering in fish tanks. It sucks the odor out of things better than baking powder. The only thing to be concerned about is that it can leave black dust on things. It's not a problem if you keep it out of direct contact or don't agitate it. I put mine in a one cup mason jar with cheesecloth in place of the metal lid.

Wipe it down thoroughly with Windex or an ammonia cleaner, especially the body covering since that absorbs the stuff more. Rather amazing to see that brownish stain come off on the cleaning cloth.

The baking soda and activated charcoal from fish tank filters are likely the best bet. Cleaning the leather covering, if it's an older metal camera, before the bs/ac treatment would be a good start, though it won't remove all odor by a long shot.

Since a good bit of the odor will be from what's migrated into the leather/rubber covering you may find that after to bs/ac treatment you may need to replace the covering if too much odor remains. If you have to resort to this be sure to remove all of the old adhesive as well.

Clean it with a vinegar water solution (like one of the other posters said, the water will turn disgustingly yellow/brown).

Than put it in a box of baking soda (but make sure you wipe off all the vinegar or you'll have a volcano!)
