Short and sweet,

Oct. '06 - dropped the F3HP on ceramic. It was dented on the bottom plate on right hand side. The base plate was dented and underneath the hand grip you could see in a 2mm space. I went to Nikon Canada, and bought a new base plate. Installed it myself. Camera kept on working.

Dec. '06 - F3HP was working, then no power. Changed batteries. It worked, then no power. Then it did not work.

Jan. 03/07 - Sent camera via EMS from UIO-YYZ. Had family memeber take my F3HP to Nikon Canada.(time elapsed, time to take it in, time for Nikon to check and quote a approx cost. The go ahead was initated to perform the work.

Feb. '07 - Work was completed, in Feb. F3HP was picked up from Nikon Canada. F3HP went flying with DHL from YYZ to UIO.

Feb 22,07. - F3HP received by owner. F3HP owner ESTATIC!

Nikon Canada - work performed - Replaced Front Plate, repaired circuit, adjusted shutter speed, replaced mirror foam pad, light seals, and clean.

Thank you DAD for receiving and sending my F3HP for service! :)

I shot a roll with my F3 a week or two ago, and also wrote a mini-review of the F3 on my blog.

I also inquired about some parts on nikonians and was surprised when the folks said to check with Nikon, as they often maintain parts for these '80s pro cameras even to now! Amazing! Wish Konica/Minolta were able to do that.

Given that Nikon still had the F3 in their "active" product catalog as late as two years ago(likely meaning they had a bit of leftover stock remaining), I'd say they will have spares on basic parts (at least) for some years to come. Between this fact, and the generally bulletproof nature of the F3 line (still my favorite "full-size" SLR), I'd say you have little to worry about.

Thanks, I was surprised that they could replace the front plate. For the labour and parts it worked out to mid 300. Regardless it was worth it. If I sent it any where else, I do not think they could service it. I can not knock Nikon Canada. They did a great job! I am going to send them a thank note.
