My Ultimate IIIC, Black Paint Titanium Shutter !!

thanks to all reply, i'm not a wizard, just a person try to build what he can't buy 🙁 . i'll reply all question at once, if possible.

Did some poor Nikon F have to die so your camera could have a titanium shutter?
Yes, in my case I use Nikon F2 shutter curtains, I don't know if the F will have the same dimension, in the first time when I search for titanium shutter, i'm gambling for which one will fit. as F2 is younger than F, I think F2 will have better curtains (maybe thinner, stronger, etc) than the F.

Were the shutter curtains a perfect fit or did you have to cut them down? I'd be a bit surprised if they were identical.

Edit: I ask as I need to pick up a parts F2 to resurrect an F2 a friend gave me... but I don't have a use for the parts cameras shutter curtain yet.

Brian, the shutter of F2, is "ALMOST" perfect fit. the dimension of the shutter it self can be direct drop replacement, BUT, if you look closely on my pictures, there are point to be noted :
- the ribbon is narrower compare to a standard leica curtain (no problem)
- the space between the ribbon and the curtain is narrower (this may need more attention, specially on 2nd curtain, 1st curtain have no problem)

the problem with the 2nd point above will/may be appear when you pass the ribbon into the rotating wheels (rollers) on the right side of camera before glued to the spring mechanism. as the space is narrower, so the ribbon will rest a little bit at the edge of the rollers. this may cause a problem if you don't do it nicely. but the leica's rollers have wide enough area to catch the ribbon, so I think this still be safe enough. at the end, NO Problem !! other than this issue, the rest is direct drop replacement.

I would be interested to know what adhesive you used to hold the titanium curtains onto the Leica drums? Both surfaces are non-porus, so that lets out a lot of popular types of glue.

well, I use common glue (castol contact adhesive) found in a book store, something that you need to dry out for few minutes and then press it together to stick. I have tested it before, it does sticks to metal nicely and strong.

Wow that's impressive. I wonder if the same could be done to an M-Series camera?
Thanks.
I don't know, I'm in the process of CLA my M2 while learning it's mechanism, so if I can get a nice set of titanium curtain and "dare" to try, I'll share again later.

That is most impressive. How does it feels like in actual use? And what adapter did you get for the lens 🙂
before CLA, it sound like "sssrrrrrrrrt cklap" (loud cklap). the "srrrrt" came from dirty gears, cracking curtain, etc.
now it like "cklap" only, smooth and low tone, quiet enough for me.
the adapters is amadeo's, you can search in ebay.

Very impressive conversion. I had Ken Ruth put Ti curtains in a Nikon S for me, and I had Robert Jagitsch paint a IIIf for me. Bottom line is that you did about US$600-$800 worth of work.
Thanks, I think I'll need to charge 600-800$ to my self for this 🙂

Ah Mr. Kelly that was that beautiful Nikon S I sold you long long ago....... you never did sent me any photos of that one 🙂 it has got to be the nicest Nikon S <EP> out there 😀 (post some pix in the Nikon RF thread)

This is also very interesting to see that a Titanium shutter can be added to a Leica IIIC, this would be a great alternative to freshen up those chrome peeling "Sharkskin" era IIIC's first with a real fine Japan Black or vintage type lacquer painting and then the new shutters, easy a $800+ job per camera 😉

Thanks pb, you are an inspiration for sure! I'm now cursing myself for selling a junker kiev-88 that had a nice set of 6x6 cm stainless steel curtains. I even contemplated a similar project, but just chickened out. Now I'm gonna keep my evil eyes open for those F2's!

I believe this will drive up the price of used F/F2 on the *bay.

Tom

maybe in US, but in my country, no one would pay for my job that high 🙁

No, it means that you are now entitled to buy more camera gear for 600-800$.

Cheers,
Uwe

the bad thing is that the money I get is already mine 😀...

very nice job, your IIIc looks great.

first I wish to know what adapter you have for the sonnar?
does it work for the contax 21mm F4.5?

secondly, does your titanium shutter make louder sound?

super thanks...

the adapter is amedeo's one. try googling around for it's compatibility.he sells m mount one & ltm one off ebay.but the m will only has 50mm frameline.that's why i prefer ltm one,as i have 50/85/135mm sonnar, just use different ltm-m adapter to match the frameline.
As i already describe before, titanium shutter is thin & light, more than the original cloth shutter of my iiic. Imho,it sound quieter, just low pitch "cklap" sound..

Good job! that's one of the finest modifications i've ever seen! Maybe if i have acquired a leica body i could ask you to mod it for me? haha! i'm indonesian too! Hebat, bro! rapi banget!

for this kind of job, you could market it overseas instead of locally.. but the problem is the custom.. oh, well.. :bang:

you are amazing... Great job on the camera! Must've been a LOT of hard work. I love the method you used to calibrate your camera too! Pure genius.

I'd love to see some photos from the camera! :]
