My V500 is out to get me!

Or at least, that's what it seems like. Every scan I've ever got from it has been grainy (even on XP2, Portra and E6), unsharp and has bad colors. Take a look at a recent test shot with Reala:

And here's one I just scanned in, taken on Elitechrome on a sunny day. The actual slide is bright and vibrant with a vivid red for the train:

What explains these poor colors? I thought for a while that the lab was making some kind of mistake (using old chemicals, etc.) but with slide film, I can see with my own eyes what it's supposed to look like. I've tried Vuescan and the included Epson scan, they both give more or less the same results. What gives?

Is the problem with the film or your scanner. Have you tried rescanning a frame of film that produced a good scan in the past to determine where the problem is?

No 1 looks like camera shake, No 2 would be a challenge for every scanner. Hard to judge without seeing the original negs / slides.

It is hard to really advise you without being there to see the film and also see all of the specific settings you are using/selecting in the scanner software.

The first picture looks like the film itself is unsharp. The second image might be able to be improved with better manual setting of the software options if you previously had just relied on one of the auto modes.

Your V500 should give you decent scans, but those two your posted are really not good examples, as others said, we can't identify where is the problem/issue without we are there with you to see all the settings or variables or the film you scan, otherwise try to have someone here to chat with you live even with webcam and show him your steps and go from there, or read some scanning tutorials on the net.

i think the issue with number 2 is exposure. the sky seems to be where you (or the camera) focused metering attention thus the blocked up lower portion.
