Well I got my copy today!

I'm thinking maybe it's a first edition. Printed 1941. Is there an earlier version? This one has no note of an edition or reprint on any of the first pages. I can usually find the little note about which edition, so I'm considering maybe this is in fact a very early copy.

hmm but SOMEONE in the history of it's ownership has had a pet c-a-t with muddy paws, the hardback cover has paw prints on it!! Also on the title page there's the address of amateur photographer penciled in, with 'amateur' spellt wrong, lol.

The phrasing is brilliant, that 'after two years of war' he has to be careful what he writes about as some materials may no longer be abundant in a few years!!

I'm thinking maybe when I have a spare few hours I'll scan the pages of this book and have it available for anyone who wants it, but of course I won't advertise that fact too much in case of copyright issues!

So Mark, which section has his story of choosing the Contax over the Leica?

I'm at work at present, Ash so can't look it up. 1941 would be a first edition IIRC. The shopping bit is in chapter 2 I think. Focal Press still appear to be in business (or another company by that name) but can't track down how long Vining's been dead.

Well I think he must have died in the 70's, considering he'd been taking photo's since the turn of last century!!

I'm working my way through the chapters, so no worried about looking it up. His short-autobiography is actually quite interesting!

Ah I found the paragraph.. I'm surprised the shop trusted him to take their most modern and expensive cameras of the time RIGHT to the door to take some photo's with!!
