I remember, when I used to work for a used car dealer, visiting a colleague of his at his home. He was showing me his rather impressive collection of vintage Harleys, and he told me a story about a particularly rare specimen that was in his collection. I believe it was something about having both an electric and kick start, apparently Harley only did this for a year or two. Anyway, when he had found this particular bike, he and his wife had just gotten married and purchased a house. They had a sum of money which they were going to use to furnish the house. He lamented to his wife, this being a particualry rare bike, but he was fully prepared to pass it over in order to buy furniture.

"Buy the bike," his wife said. "You're never going to find another one like it, and we can always buy furniture later."

I don't think you should use the term pillock. It is not a nice term to describe people like me. Since I technically am one (I'm not sure what "technically" means, but I've heard people use the word), I would prefer you use a different term when describing me, and, possibly yourself.

Due to my sensitivity, my wife has taken to calling me a '****ing idiot' rather than a pillock. My self esteem is much improved, and it works for us. We just had our anniversary (true) and although we don't make much money (apparently, as I've been told, due to my being a '****ing idiot' ), we are happy.

In short, I don't think the term is appropriate and I don't think anyone else should use it either. 😉

I just now purchased a used Mamiya 645J off of eBay, complete with lens and finder. It was a good deal (I think) as I usually see these go for maybe $50-$100 more than I paid, still... I don't really need anymore cameras, and it is more than I usually allow myself to spend. However, I've just been really jonesing for a really nice medium format camera. My Zeiss folder is nice, but it has its limitations, especially since it is a scale focus.

There is always a zeitgeist. Something that is perfectly acceptable at one time can become an outmoded and unpleasant cliché at another.

There is also Karma. Zeitgeist can be used to explain some things, but doesn't make them right. When I was a kid I heard that term used occasionally, too... but we all knew it wasn't right.

I much prefer your philosophies on cameras and marriage. 🙂

Very bizarre thread. May as well participate.

On the term "Nigg*r": in Spanish, we find it very cumbersome to be PC. You see, negro is THE only accurate word. And historically, here in South America, is anything but derisive. Sometimes used as a term of endearment, actually, i.e. "mi negrita".

On the whole marriage and cameras issue: My first wife though I spended too much in cameras. I divorced her. No, I am not impliyng cause and effect here ;-)
My wife (may I introduce you? see avatar) thinks greatly of all my expensive hobbys, and always wants me to get a new camera, another Land Rover, yet another dog. I reckon I will be with her 'till the cows come home. Wanna know why? Becuase she allows me to err. If, say, I made fun of her with a sexist comment, she'd understand I am human, and act accordingly. In short, she has tolerance, and I've learned to be tolerant too. I think that makes or breakes a marriage. Or any kind of human relationship

You should build up your spouse, not denigrate them. I'm my wife's biggest fan and she mine. I'd never make her the butt of a joke or the target of a sexist remark. It's a simple matter of respect.
