Life is a full contact sport. The world is not chock full of puppies, flowers and sunshine. A photography exhibit should not be mandated to be, either. Particularly a documentary photo exhibit.

Sorry, but I have a real problem with censorship - particularly of documentary photography.

Censorship is half a step ahead of book burning IMHO.

What they are saying is that some photos are not appropriate for this particular venue. It's a public space and a community festival. Obviously the decision is woefully late, but the hue and cry of censorship seems unfounded. I don't see the big deal.

because we decided quite a while ago that in civilized countries the government ought not be able to dictate what is and is not appropriate in regards to freedom of speech where it does not cross into threats or the maliciously untrue.

This is not what we've 'decided' in a legal sense, in Australia. There is no explicit right to freedom of speech in Australian law except political speech which is protected from criminal prosecution under common law as decided in Australian Capital Television Pty Ltd v Commonwealth.

So if you want to have this set in stone, campaign, or move.
