OK I'm finally ready to upgrade from my Nikon LS-2000 film scanner. Main reason being my computer and XP just hates the SCSI adapter. I scan mostly (entirely?) B&W film. I'd like to keep it under $500 and rarely print 8x10 and never bigger than 11x14. Recommendations for a good used yesterday model scanner needed.

You'll get lots of recommendations for a Minolta. The Coolscan V is over your budget.

I picked up a Coolscan IV for $325 recently. I don't know how much difference there is between that and the LS-2000 (I think the IV is also known as the LS-4000).
