Need help scanning

ive been scanning my negs for the past year using a canon 8600f scanner. Ive just been using the default mode but for some reason the other day my photos have come up as really small photos (5cm in length). I usually scan at 1600dpi. Can anyone direct me to a good site for scanning or offer some tips because i guess i should learn about scanning in more depth
