What is this called?
It is in excellent condition except the glass is chipped. Would that effect photos?

Usually there were not used as a lens previewer, but as a focusing aid in macro and photomicrography applications. Yours, with an Exakta SLR mount, is a bit odd - most have a Contax/Nikon RF mount, such a device having more obvious uses when using a camera without SLR finder.

As far as I know, Ihagee used the same matte screen dimensions throughout all Exaktas - it is very likely that a Exakta screen would fit here as well.

Ah, I see - the distance piece between lens and screen has the same shape as a finder insert. So this could be employed to use a lens as a strong magnifier...

Your critical focus accessory is described halfway down the page. Now all you need is an Exakta Varex IIa in great shape and (e.g.) a macro 35/2.8 Flektogon you need to focus critically! Preferably with a pristine Biotar connected to this magnifier.

In other words: this is a baby carrot leading into the Exakta rabbit hole. Beware! Or have fun.
