Need some info on M2 and a couple of lenses please!

The 35 lux does indeed have the original hood as well Tom. I didn't check it over very much because I am not really interested in buying anything other than the 9cm. It is all sitting on a shelf at work now 😛, but the lens did look very clean when I was perusing it all yesterday. What is a fair price for the 35 with a hood do you think?

I am not overly worried about the haze in the 9cm. My main issue is do I really need another 90. I am really short on cash right now, but the lens isn't very expensive. I do like how small and compact it gets! Maybe I should shoot both lenses. I might even decide to get rid of the CV 90? I dunno. Maybe I will borrow it today and shoot some tests with both to see the results.

On a side note, I see a documentary on D-Day on tv right now and the dramatization is talking about Capa taking his famous shots and what do you know, they actually put the proper camera with the guy playing him running up the beach, a Contax!

Keep the Collapsible! It is a neat lens, especially on an M2 or M3. I need another 90 like a "hole in the head", but this one is a keeper!

You will find the lower-contrast of the Elmar is better for black and white. Preserves shadow detail and highlights.

I haven't shot a roll of color let in my M6! I was trying to find some shots with it on flickr but haven't found much.. I did just remember that I have a Polaroid 600SE that has never been used. hmmmmm that could fund 3/4 of the price right there....

Damn you people.

Chris, the Summilux and the OLLUX should bring in at least $1500 if not more. The hood alone sells for $300 in good shape - rivalling the Nikkor hoods. If you want to create a collectible hood, just make one that keeps falling off!
I would put the lens/hood on E-bay and a reserve of $1000 on it. Try a couple of rolls with it though as you might get addicted to it, It is the antithesis of the 35/2 Asph. Not necessarily a bad thing as the Asph's tend to look almost artificial in their sharpness and contrast. I used the 35/1,4 version 1 for many years and though I occasipnally swore at the f1/4 softness and lack of contrast, it still produced some memorable images. It is also on of the best looking of Leicas 35mm lenses and on a M2 it looks right.

The goggles will only work optimally with the satin chrome DR. The Heavy bright chrome model with the deeply scalloped focus ring Takes a different model

Two "back-Yard" shots with the Collapsible 9cm Elmar, after cleaning the haze out on each side of the aperture blades, on my M2.

Wide-Open.

Stopped down to F5.6:

No Photoshop, just the scanner auto-settings. Actual prints done with more contrast.

Brian, can I be ABSOLUTELY clear what you mean by this? HOW did you use a rubber grommet to take off the name ring? I'm keen to have a try, but I don't want to do the wrong thing.

Regards,

Bill

There is an answer to this from another member but I go to the hardware store and then to the section where they sell the rubber tips for chair legs, walking sticks etc. Find one of the correct diameter - i.e. same diameter as the retaining ring and you can use this. If necessary you can refine it a bit by sanding it till its the right size and thickness. You can also sand the face of the rubber so its the same angle as the retaining ring and has a "grippy" surface.

The idea is to place the hollow round section of the rubber grommet (not really sure if technically this is its right name but it will do) against the face of the retaining ring while securing the lens by hand and then twisting. The retaining ring should rotate and unscrew. Obviously be careful not to abrade the front of the lens surface.

If necessary I also retain the lens by wrapping it in something soft - e.g. neoprene or a section cut from a mouse pad ) or even part of an old cotton T shirt will do) and gently putting it in a wooden faced vice. Discretion is needed here obviously but it gives me an extra hand to work with.

Well thanks to you people there is now a 9cm collapsible sitting next to me here that is going to get tested today and tomorrow! I want to see how much the haze effects things. Someday I could sent it in to be overhauled when I have some spare cash. Will post some pics on Tuesday. Thanks a lot guys.... 😛

Well I shot some tests with both my CV 90 and the 9cm Collapsible. I was all set to pick up the 9cm, but after viewing my shots I think I am going to just stick with my CV.

The Leica was no slouch don't get me wrong, even with hazing in it, it matched the CV, but that was just it. I really saw no difference between the two lenses. I shot multiple things in the exact same spot. Take shot, switch lens, take shot etc. Honestly if I hadn't memorized that I shot the Leica first each time, I wouldn't have a clue which was which!!!

I guess that's saying something for the quality of a 50 year old lens, but as I already have the CV, I don't think I need to spend $250-300 just to duplicated it with a leica name!

I also noticed that I much preferred the focus of the CV. I have a bad left thumb and can't use it very well. It makes it more difficult to focus some lenses. The 35 summicron and the CV I already own are simple to focus with just one finger, the 9cm on the other hand was impossible to focus that way. I had to use my thumb and fingers to turn it and it definitely took me a lot longer to focus that way.

So that is that I guess. Thanks everyone for the info and recommendations! I think this lens, as great as it is, just isn't a good suit for me.
