I plan to get a J-8 as a play around lens. I need some tips to help maximize my chance of getting a non-animal copy of the lens. I have been messing with fleabay for a while. All I can find are Russian/Ukraine sellers selling the J-8 at 50-60 shipped. Since they all look alike, I really don't know which one to pick. Is there any other (more reliable) places that sells them? If not, who and which year/color/camera should I buy it from/with?

Valdas, those people might want to keep quiet or they'd probably get a flood of requests.

Heck, I'm still casually watching for a FED 2 that I can use a J-12 on (one of the later ones with the elevated shoe). And a J8. And maybe a J3 if I was feeling overly spendy. :)

You can never tell what you got with a J-8 lens until you use it.
Dogs or keepers can come in any year of manufacture or style of the J-8 lens. This has been my experience.

you are right, on the second thought I deleted my post...

I bought one from Fedka a while back. I think he tests them to make sure they are OK. I then bought one (new old stocK from Russia) off ebay. Both were cheap enough to take a chance on and they were fine.

I bought a Jupiter 8 attached to a Kiev on for about $50 including shipping! Both camera & lens work fine. This might be cheaper than buying a leica screwmount version. The seller was caxa 2002 in Latvia. Great service, he sells a lot of FSU stuff. Good luck

I need to get one in M39 mount to mount on my M4. The Kiev version is definitely cheaper but won't work on Leicas.

Just wondering for those who bought from Fedka, have you ever gotten a bad copy of the lens. According to him, "the lenses has not been tested with film on real leicas, but they all went through a check on a lab collimator, and should perform as intended." I don't want to pay the premium and still end up with a dog copy.

Just get one from igor @ http://www.igorcamera.com/leica_copies.htm

he has two for sale:

Zorki-4 #61639288, Jupiter 5cm/2 #6144987 chrome, case, Ex+ $45.

Zorki-4 #67123943, Jupiter 5cm/2 #6767792 (dent) chrome, Ex+ $40.

Thanks, greatly appreciated. Definitely picking up one of these.

Anybody with experience with Fedka's adapter ring?

I know the most popular adapter is the CV one sold by camera quest. But the price seems a bit steep considering the lens I use on it. Any cheaper, yet still quality alternative to these two?
