Need to Know: Serious new internet law in the US

Jan

Interesting item on trying to control what is on the net as if that were possible but I guess people will try.

George

I always viewed the Torys as being the next best thing to a Republican and certainly not anti US. Anyway a view from outside is always interesting if not refreshing.

Is it just me and my stupidity or is this new law a bit vaguely formulated?

Well, this will probably continue to fuel the ongoing anti-US-feelings here in Scandinavia :)

Too bad. I like the US but not its politics.

Sivert

Until we know what the Feds decide to do with this new law, we should keep the flames to a minimum... unless we're using our real names and real photos ... like Jan and I do. :D :p

Jan was just trying to be helpful and keep us out of trouble. Thanks, Jan. The rest of you will probably get busted.
:bang:

Bob,

Tory is a moveable term. In those days, they were the Loyalists. The ones who hanged Patrick Henry and would've done the same to the rest of our "Founding Fathers".

They went up to O when they lost - and were all the more bitter because of it.

If you travel along the Loyalist Trail (i.e. the northern shore of Lake Ontario) even to this day - you will "taste and smell" the bitterness of a defeated people. I never believed it myself until I did so. It's weird - kind of like going into a historical "time warp".

As to the other commentaries - as per my first post in this thread - I don't like current US politics either. I'm a liberal Democrat.

But I know a red herring when I see one. There is an election going on right now in CA and the usually shoe-in Liberals are worried because of various scandals that keep popping up. Hence, their party leader, Paul Martin has been beating an anti-US drum as a rallying point (and as a means of distracting the voters from the sleaze problem). And, lockstep the leftish T.O. media, which dominates political discourse in the Anglophone part of CA, is doing all it can to ensure Martin's Liberals remain in power.

Not necessarily a bad thing, perhaps, but it goes to show, world over, pols are pols and will stoop to whatever to stay in power.

Gosh is this way OT or what - anyway - I posted my first poor effort at a Cafe shot on Joe's thread. Hope I can get a better one before month end!

Back to your RF gear everyone - we have a shooting assignment! ;)

Agreed, politicians are the same world over no matter the label. Now if I only did cafe shots.

I know some politicians. As personal friends they can be great. As politicians they align with their constituents, and logic and reason go out the window.

Would it be OK for a non-USian to use his initials? :)

Copake Ham,
Inflammatory posts are really your forte, it seems to me.
You have a great strategy...you inflame, insult and deride, then you duck and run; at least you say you will, but "every time you think you're out, they pull you back in."

Call me an idiot, call me a lipstick wearing pig, but I have no idea what your rant about Canadian politics, with the interesting sidebar of North American revolutionary history has to do with this US legislation, that was talked about in US media sources.

That it was a Canadian posting the "heads up" has little to do with the actual meat of the message..indeed I feel bad for the poster, because he'll now feel like he has to keep silent.

And indeed, what the hell business is it of yours to imply or insinuate, even sarcastically, that someone not of US nationality should stay off a US forum?

This is an international sandbox, and everyone's welcome to play in it. I'm sure your mother told you that you must share the sandbox with other people...you gain no ownership of the sandbox by peeing in it.

copake_ham, I'm so disappointed with this election that I will drag myself 3 blocks to vote; but instead of an X I'm going to spoil 'er with my thoughts: all liars, cheats and crooks! Or I'll vote communist. This election is one very sad affair.

And now you think these clowns are capable of regulating communication on the Internet?
When everyone with the time and software can set up a blog or a website etc.?

Apart from a staggering attack on the British establishment, which I 75% agreed with, your post avoids the issue.

If you pass bad laws then citizens need to draw attention to them so that they can be overturned or accurately interpreted (in our muddled up old British system).

By drawing attention to the bad law democracy works.

It isn't the clowns now, it's the lawyers who will use such laws in 1-50 years to suppress something, law is important enough to get right or to resolve if it has been got wrong.

George: You are cracking me up! Your characterization of Canada in general, Ontario in particular, and Toronto-based media very specifically is very "interesting". Anyway, I'm one of those fortunate dual citizens who is free to leave the Excited States and will do so when my personal stars align.

In the meantime, Jan clearly stated the topic of his post (as he has reiterated) was the "annoy" wording. What is astonishing to me is that the current hacks in the white house consider blunt tools like the word "annoy" to be precision surgical instruments.

So how did we get off on Canadian society and politics? Because you sort of impugned the orignal poster since he is Canadian, and central Canadian at that!

Do you REALLY want me to withdraw my offer of sending you off a brick of that 7-year cheddar from nasty, freedom-hating Ontario? :p

Earl

What's this about bricks of 7 yearl old cheddar?
That sounds both sharp and tasty...we only have at best 3 year old over hereabouts.

Hey, I live here and feel the same way. By the way, most of us down here are pretty clueless about Canada. We wouldn't know Paul Martin from Martin Short.

Signed anonomously,

bobofish: The small town of New Hamburg, Ontario is close to my home, the somewhat larger "city" of Stratford. There's a cheese maker in New Hamburg that has a retail shop in a non-descript, newish retail plaza. They have 3, 5 and sometimes 7-year cheddar. Last time I was able to get some (the 7-year is not always available, as you can imagine), it was about $15CDN/lb, which I consider a very good price.

Anyway, this stuff is sharp without being bitter, dry without being so crumbly it's not useable, and the flavour is like no other cheddar I've had. I have had good cheddars from Ontario, Quebec, England and some other areas. This one is my favourite, though it's a preference thing. I could live quite happily with some of the others, too.

Earl

i have no idea what this thread is NOW about.
i do know it's somewhat annoying.
i realize that i'm a dual citizen. glad of it to boot!

i also am keenly aware of how easy it is to distract kids with primary colours.
and that this is a rangefinder based photo forum.

time, gentlemen, please...

The cheeese is much easier on the palate than politics.

Again, signed completely anonymously,
