Needing inspiration

Hello everyone,

I have joined the forum to re kindle my interest in film and my Mamiya 711

I have been using a digital camera for the past few months and it is so easy to use....and fun!

However although the prints look good enough in colour from the digital the monochrome prints don't compare with the prints made from those 6x7 negs

So, back to the dark room!

Would love to know what kind of scanner is best for Mamiya.

I am using a Minolta multiscan II which scans at 2820 DPI and holds up to a 6 x 9 negative. I am thinking about upgrading to the model III which has higher resolution. However, it costs 2500.00 My multiscan II can be had for about 300 to 500 thesedays on ebay. Now that I think about it, I may actuall sell it to upgrade :) If you go to the gallery, all my Fuji pictures have been scanned with the Monolta.
 
I have a Minolta Multiscan also, but only recently and I have yet to hook it up and get it going. Now that the new computer is apparently running ok, I have the power useful for editing large scans, and will get to it!

In studying the available choices, this Minolta seemed to be the one with the best set of strong points and the least bothersome weaknesses.

I was looking for something to handle 16mm, 110, half-frame 35, 35mm, 126, 127 (4x4), 6x4.5, 6x6, 6x7. That does sound like "multi-format" doesn't it? :-0 I will have to do the few 3 1/4 x 4 1/4 on the flat-bed.

It actually may be a bit of overkill, as medium and larger format negs/transparencies might scan sufficiently well for most purposes on a flat-bed scanner. And then a dedicated 35mm scanner is much cheaper, and gives a boost in quality where it's most needed.

Well, we shall see! Do you have a view on this from your experience, Jorge?

why not take a minute and register?

i support your desire to get back into film, especially with such a great camera and those incredible mamiya lenses.
i'm just re-motivating myself to shoot more and get back into the darkroom also.

maybe try our monthly photo project if you need a bit of a push.

Thanks, everyone, it is mid summer here in Sydney and I have been out and about with the Mamiya. I do miss the instant feed back that you get with digital though.

the results will be worth it.

i used my 6 this weekend, after playing with some ebay 35mm rangefinders lately and was amazed at much i love this camera.
the size, the feel, the shape - it fits so well in my smallish hands...i may just start carrying it around daily.

At a more modest level, many of us using MF have been getting decent results from the Epson 2450 (and the later 3200) flatbed scanner with transparency adapter. It's not ideal for 35mm but for larger negs, it's quite good (though not as good as a more expensive MF film scanner, obviously).

I use a 2450 for my Rolleiflex TLR 6x6 and my Voigtlander folding camera 6x9 negs and have been very happy with it, considering the price.

The latest word I've heard is that Epson is replacing the 3200 with a new model called the 4870 but I haven't seen any yet in the stores.
