I scan with a Minolta MultiPro at 4800 dpi.

That may account for our difference in perception. Digital is much more malleable. Curve shape becomes much less of an issue, or maybe just a lesser issue but in the opposite direction.
I still don't disagree with you about prints, but sure notice a difference working with the negatives in the darkroom to get those prints.
