I try not talk about it away from home anymore. People just don't understand!

I thought I had some support at home until the other day...

My son caught me eyeing of a Limited Edition Leica on fleablay the other day. "Another camera", he sighed. I then went on to tell him why it was not just another camera. It is a thing of beauty blah blah blah..... I showed him the enlarged photos and even zoomed in on the extra lovely bits. I was so excited I was sweating!

He shook his head sadly and said "Helen, can't you see that its an old camera?"

Nerd? Nah.
 
I'm not sure where I fall. I'm a bit smarter than 'average' intelligence ( but only due to the average being pretty low,) I obsess about images but not especially equipment and I am socially awkard and hide behind a big smiley happy frontage.

Geek or Nerd? I could be both, either or pretty much like everyone else only a little worse at hiding my awkwardness. I'd rather be a bit nerdy or geeky than be labelled 'cool,' they're usually the dull ones more interested in appearance than substance. Though by this thought I should be hoping people comment on my photos with 'nerdy pic' or 'great geeky shot' rather than with comments like 'cool photo'... I'm not ready to admit my pictures lack substance despite any weight of evidence!

PS - I don't wear glasses but if it's a sunny day I may peer over the top of my shades at you😀
 
I can not find my favorite reference, need to wake up. The way I remember it is this

Geeks can do stuff, they talk the talk and walk the walk.

Nerds can not, they talk a lot.

But I like girls, and whisky, and sports (windsurfing and running) -- all not very nerdy things, or are they?

I think I would not classify my self as photo-nerd. Well, only a little.

To me, a photo-nerd is the kind of people who take pictures of charts, measure shoulders-and-toes of film development density charts , or talk for hours about sensor photo-site constructions and their merits. In other words, they are very methodical, meticulous, and rigorous in their research.

Some rare photo-nerds are also artistically-inclined, they use their nerdiness to help them to produce kick-butt photos. That makes him/her an artistic-photo-nerd. Other photo-nerds, just take photographs because it makes them more sure about a certain "characteristics" of a lens... or to prove a point to someone on an internet forum.

The elite (or well-connected) photo-nerds work for the design team in camera manufacturing plants. Without them, we won't have anything to brag/bicker about here.

So as you can see, photo-nerds are very important to the advancement of photography, but thank God we are not *all* photo-nerds 🙂
 
I associate these terms only to computers and Internet. Linux nerd sounds more plausible than photo nerd. still, voted first option 🙂

Now, even though the terms "nerd" and "geek" are certainly parts of our popular culture and lexicon, I disagree with the validity of their usage. I think they are applied to people out of sheer ignorance, like the "n" word was/is applied to people of African American heritage.

I wonder how successful we'll be (especially here in the States) in getting more students interested in math and science, hopefully ending up with good careers in science and engineering, when we continue to devalue the focus on technical education by continuing to use these pejorative terms like "nerd" and "geek".

Meanwhile, we'll continue to place a greater focus within media on the urban gang/drug culture, and overpaid sports figures, and mass merchandising these negative stereotypes as popular heroes to our kids.

I do, however, like Intel's recent advertising campaign where they elevate the role of tech geek into a kind of cultural hero. Definitely a step in the right direction, even if it's for crass commercial purposes.

I think photography needs more "nerd" character from their practitioners than the rest of arts or crafts because of it's high degree of precision needed regarding several variables that compose exposure. Personally I don't think AE is possible. It's possible a few times or even many times, but only a skilled photographer can override it just as it's necessary so many times,

Ah, goody...someone's getting warm here.

I'm thinking of (now Senator) Al Franken's remark a few years back about the definition of a wonk: essentially, "a geek who can get dates." My modifier would be that a wonk is a geek who either already has a Significant Other or wouldn't have too much trouble finding or attracting one. Not just a geek who might get lucky, but does...early and often. 😉

Not that I go calling myself that every time I sidle up to the bar...

Interesting language! English is very rich... There are lots of modern words we don't have in spanish. I like "wonk"... Never heard it before. Wonkfinder Cameras... Wonkfinder Forum... Sounds OK... 🙂
