new acronym?

I was typing in the "just waiting for the mail?" thread about my first FSU camera which arrived yesterday, a FED2 (type d, I think). As I was about to use the standard 'FSU' acronym, it occured to me: saying "so I got a new FSU" doesn't really make sense if you expand it. "Dude, I got a new Former Soviet Union today! Full set, complete with Kamchatskaya!"

So I started to substitute 'FSU rf', for FSU rangefinder of course, and then it struck me. Run 'em all together, and you get FSURF. I can't resist it. "Hey, so I'm gonna skip work this morning and take a walk by the river. I'm hittin' it with the FSURF." "Man, you were rockin' the FSURF yesterday. Would've made Lenin proud."

It's fun to say, just like of imitating Keanu Reeves from "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure".

A lot of these acronyms take on their own lives after a while. A good example that makes me laugh is a bank here in Missouri. All their signs say "UMB Bank", which, when spelled out says, "United Missouri Bank Bank."

Yeah, a nice variant on the classic ATM Machine. 😉

A few years ago, a new political party was formed here in Canada. At their inaugural convention, they chose the name Canadian Conservative Reform Alliance. The name was quickly changed after someone pointed out the fact that the acronym for the Canadian Conservative Reform Alliance party would be CCRAP, or alternatively Canadian CRAP.

Ah too true... I should have said FSU...but FSURF looked too much like a watersport organization...lol 😀

In 1972, in the US, Richard Nixon's Re-election campaign committee was called "Committee to RE-Elect the President" It was commonly referred to as CREEP! 😉

(Personal Computer being an amusing enough phrase to begin with. I know the origin, but it still strikes me funny. Is it to differentiate from an IMpersonal computer? If so, it's awfully ironic that IBM popularized them! Okay, I'm done being a geek.)
