New APOQUARIA-G 1.4/35 from MS Optical

MTF at f/1.4 seems quite poor.

On par with the 35lux pre ASPH, which is pretty normal given that the lens is a plain 6/4 double gauss. Plus that it's tiny. We'll just have to see how it glows...

I agree that for six elements in four groups, this looks like a very decent MTF at f/1.4. More than one or two Leica lenses have MTFs that sag all the way to the bottom of the chart at the highest LP/mm frequency. So if the price is right, maybe it's a winner.

I'd love to see sample shots at f/2 and wide open.

Also will there be a black version? 1000€ for a new lens like this sounds affordable to me

It is not clear what standard was used by Mr. Myazaki to draw MTF charts.
There is no reference to ISO 12233:2000.

If that is your frame of reference it is far from clear what standard any camera lens manufacturer, including Leica, used for this purpose. Why wouldn't it be CIPA? It's not like the existence of an ISO standard for something means that an industry has adopted it.

ISO often codifies (and then sells) what were pre-existing standards, and in some industries, adoption of ISO standards may only go as far as cherry picking bits and pieces of standards. So it's hard to say there is anything magic about the appearance of ISO vel non. Look at the data sheet for TMY, where Kodak says that it uses methods "similar" to ISO 6328 to determine film resolution.

BTW, ISO 12233:2000 as a source of test charts is only one of many (USAF, IEEE, CIPA, Imatest) - and it's also obsolete. ISO updated the chart in 2014 to include color.

I saw one on ebay last night along with the test shots. It was lens #9. I was actually a bit tempted by it but was disappointed about the focusing lever. For some reason I thought it was going to use the same one as the special edition of the lens. That was enough for me to step back and thing about the lens more rationally.

Specifically, what are its strengths relative to the Voigtlander 35/1.4? I'm curious about how they'll compare.

where are the sample shots? someone please go and buy one and post some .. thank you. 😀

There were some test shots shown on the link in the JCH article, taken seemingly through a shop window, bizarre. Unless the window effect is a feature.

Yeah .. I missed those. Rather ridiculous subject for test shots. I don't know what I'm supposed to see there .. if open aperture, less "glowing" then the pre-asph?

Must be lots of people looking at it because I am not able to get to the article itself. I'll wait a bit and try again.

ok - i found this Flickr user who owns one the three pics from today are with that lens he says.

for me they seem to be shot at f/1.4 .. if so I like that lens. I'd only love to see now how the distortion looks like.

one thing that I don't like is that it has no 39mm filter thread although it would have been possible.

Received the 35mm Apoqualia via JCH and took it out for a spin today with my MM to get a quick feel for its handling.

First impressions are:

A distinct glow a f/1.4
Good enough sharpness in the center at close distances and wide apertures.
Edges are sharper than center when partially stopped down and focused at infinity
At mid focus distances, mid distance edges but central area infinity are together sharp at wide apertures.
( still to try stopped down infinity )

The focus tab/pin feels good
When the lens focus is swept from infinity to minimum , the RF image shift reverses as lens goes into uncoupled close distances
The mounted lens hood takes E46 filters and caps

This little lens is going to take time to master.
