New. C Sonnar T* 1,5/50 ZM

And we all thought they'll stick to f2 and slower, now they are going after 'lux territory :)

And I don't like straps, they look sexy on pictures but all those latches and buttons scratch. They are pretty comfortable on the inside, but since I don't wear them myself I only encounter the outside. :angel:

Wow.

That 'C' for compact indicator is no lie. It looks smaller than the f2 lens! And it makes the CV Nokton look like a right old lump.

Very interesting to see them announcing a new lens so soon after the introduction of quite a substantial system. This says good things for how the ZM system has been selling so far, I would imagine.
 
What's interesting to me is that they didn't just decide to offer more speed, but they're doing so with a different lens design. So, you have the choice of a Planar at f/2 or a Sonnar at f/1.5, which means 2 different finger prints & access to a classic design that hasn't been available in this focal length for a very long time. By comparison, a Leica Summilux & a Summicron are both double-Gauss designs, same as the Planar.
 
this is all I want! i have always wanted a modern version of the old compact sonnar lenses, now to start saving the money. or wait, or am I saving for the RD1... damn the confusion!
 
Nice! Wish I could justify one... but I already have a Nokton. It looks to my eyes to be a good bit more compact. Bet they don't come cheap. (ah well, I'm happy to have another Sonnar on the way, a 1964 chrome Jupiter 8 :D)

Very promising.

It will be fun to test it against the old Zeiss sonnars as well as the Canon and Nikon LTM derivatives. Anyone see a price point?
 
Anyone notice the ever-so-slightly wider field of view? It's heavier than the Planar, and close focus is .9M. None of which makes any big difference, but if I were looking to purchase, the close focus would be a bit frustrating for me.

Hm, they advertise it as a PJs lens, there the close focus is not much of a problem.

For a head-shoulder portrait this is not close enough, but for reportage it is fine.
 
Close focus, MTF, size, weight, price, all interesting questions, but the main point is that this is a 50/1.5 sonnar, from Zeiss.

There are lots of people out there who won't swap their sonnars for summicrons, summiluxes, flying pigs... There are even those who never managed to get their hands on one and feel the same about their LTM Nikkors... Crazy, but true. ;)

Bad news indeed! Last year I spent a fortune having a Contax IIa and a 1.5 Sonnar restored by Henery as the 1.5 Sonnar wasn't readily available for my Leica gear!

Well, I guess I'm going to have to save my pennies!

If they would only make the the 85mm f/1.4 in Olympus OM mount I would ignore the new Sonnar 1.5!

I agree with the minimum close focus. I have a Canon f1.4 LTM that has a wonderful quality but find its close focus distance too long for me.
 
The 6/4 optical layout is interesting for a 50mm Sonnar. This layout is typical of a DG design like the Planar. It indicates Zeiss chose the Sonnar designation strictly for the lens speed of F/1.5 that harkens back to their old Contax lens and has nothing to do with the optical design of a modified triplet.
