most (or all?) of the new leica lenses have star-shaped apertures. it shows up as saw-teeth in big prints.

The prewar Sonnar only stopped down to f/11, correct?
I suspect the slightly more star-shaped diaphragm was a side effect of redesigning the blades to allow a smaller minimum aperture.

The prewar collapsible sonnar stopped down to f/22. the noncollapsible went to f/16.
the prewar f/1.5 went to f/11. the postwar seem to go only to f/16.

Oh, I'm often very wrong, & about many things. But I do know my RF Sonnars (which means I pretty much have to buy this new 1 so that I can say I've owned them all)!
dexdog said:Furcafe, you are right, as usual. I just looked at all my post-war and pre-war Sonnars, and only the post-war 50/1.5 and the Zeiss-Opton 85/2 exhibit the star shape (although it is less well- expressed in the 85/2 due to the large number of iris blades). My pre-war 50s and 85/2 do not exhibit the star shape.

Where? Since Zeiss has been clamping down on distribution, seems to me the only retailers left (such as B&H, Freestylephoto) are charging around 800 for the 50/2. I bet the 50/1.5 will be 1500, or at least 1000. But, what do I know.back alley said:my guess would be 800 hundred.
the 50/2 goes for 600.

i recently bought the 50/2 from stephen.
if it's a $1000 or $1500 it would be out of my budget range then so i'm hoping not.

one stop faster usually means twice as expensive, but i'm guessing it will be around $900 to compete against the pre-asph summilux.

Dont quote me but when I was surfing the Zeiss site yesterday I thought I saw a recomended price of 999 Euro. Thats about 1270 USD. If Zeiss doesnt price fix through its new dealer network then you should see prices around the 1000 dollar mark I would imagine. Must see if I can find where I saw that prce again!

My 50/1.4 Nikkor has a star-shaped aperture and pleases me greatly.
Our friend in Hong Kong guesses about £500 but has no firm information yet...
Ho hum. I thought I was done too...

Hi, my first post here, though I've been lurking for a while.
I wonder how this lens fits into Zeisses overall strategy going forward. If they make a digital rangefinder and it has a reduced sensor size this would be a short telephoto, which their current ZM 35mm line is biased against. Also, if they were going with a reduced sensor size they could have made a 35/1.4, that would have made a fast normal and a good available light lens. It's wishful thinking on my part but I read this as saying that their digital will be full frame (yes that's alot to read into this).
Just having some fun with speculation and hoping for a full fullframe future.

more faster lenses could be in the works. 35/1.4, 28/2, 85/1.4...

I seem to remember reading on Zeiss' site that they were working toward a full frame sensor, but I could be wrong.

The ZM line seems like a nostalgic move to bring back the old, established Zeiss designs - which I'm happy to buy. Did they ever have faster lenses at these focal lengths as they did at 50?

i'd be happy to buy more than just the nostalgic, traditional designs.

That whimpering you hear is the sound of my wallet as I read the datasheet. Oh, my... When the first ZM lenses were announced I was annoyed that there wasn't a 50 Sonnar in the line up. Now we see why
I do hope the price is something resembling sane. I'd love to actually be able to somehow afford this one in the not too distant future.
Classic design, modern tech... be sweet to put it on the CL.

A simple question: is the proposed new ZM 50/1.5 better than the current ZM 50/2.0? If it is, Zeiss does not say so in their specs.

there is that relative term 'better'.
being a sonnar design it will have a different look to it. a look that many will want.
do a search here on canon 50/1.5 and jupiter j-3 lenses. there should be some pics to show the softer edges of the sonnar.

Not so simple answer, depends.
Sonnar2s analysis of the known data looks very promising to me.
