I'm with you Joe. Return ads to the way they were. I just completed some non-RF ebay sales today and have money now for a "membership" but I want to wait now to see how things settle out and find out what I will be paying for exactly.

I agree with the subscription fee. I think that it should be around $10 a year. People who donated $25 should have the option of getting $15 back if they want. I think that once you are a member then you should be able to do everything on the site, no limits, just a flat fee. All members would be equal and there wouldn't be different privelages to people who pay more. I never really liked the idea of an upgraded gallery anyway. Also, if we do go the subscription route, you should set a date for implementing it and announce it, just so that whoever doesnt feel like paying will have time to say goodbye and all that.

I personaly don't think all those who for one reason or another can't afford the fee would like it known. If you chose to stat it thats fine. I personaly would pay the 10 or so yearly fee for everything but the gallery. but the 25 or more I just will not. That's me. If you think it's fair no problem. The changes and problems with the site ( not blaming anyone ) have lowered my intrest to the point I am about to GSS my RFs John

I am 100% for the Joe proposal. I want to thank the membership for posting some great ideas. I also think that generally, most people prefer the old classified system and we should return to it as soon as possible.

I also feel the amount of commercial advertising we have now is in good taste and not obtrusive. I am glad we do not have large banners of advertising from unrelated, non photographic, sources.

we could keep the $25 gallery upgrade and that could include the subscription charge and charge a lower ( 5 to 10 buck) for a basic subscription, which would include everything we have have to date.
i strongly suggest that there be no icons or signs publicly showing the difference in membership.
the gallery upgrade is an upgrade in perks not an upgrade in personality or status. we are all rf lovers and that should be enough for people here.

this is just my suggestion.

joe

joe, are you suggesting a two-tier subscription-based site (a basic subscription [$5~10], and an extended subscription that includes the gallery perks [totalling $25])? Just clarifying. Maybe a poll?

🙂

Since the goal is to provide a revenue stream sufficient to support the site (with improvements) I think Joe's alternative is fine.

I gave $ to help pay the bills. I never asked for additional "features" or "privileges" for having done so.

I suggest that joe and Jorge should figure out what is a fair level of fee and when the "start date" should be in order to give folks some time to decide whether they want to join and to find the funds to do so.

very close to the how of how we got here.

it seems the reality is that we are changing, have changed.
it now is much more expensive to run this site.
jorge could be driving a very nice car if the money went to a car payment rather than to the running of this site.
i'm not suggesting we buy him a car...😉
but to keep the site going some form of income, other than advertising, has to happen or we will go bust.
i'm not smart enough to know what is best but listening to all of you, it seems that a small subscription is the most popular.

Well stated Joe, thank you.

As a moderator Jorge has extended the benefits of a "Premium Membership" to me, but as I have done twice before, I have made a donation to support the site. I appreciate all that RFF offers me as part of my hobby and I am more than willing to participate with more than just my hot air. I am happy to hear this conversation continue and grow with a lot of ideas, and option/opinions. It all will help Jorge make the best decision possible for RFF.

Jorge, I would like to suggest a separate classified for items that are free or $20 or less. Why make someone pay a fee when their doing something generous. Members here often sell gear for allot less then they could get elsewhere because they know other members will benefit.

I like the idea of a tiered membership.

I am concerned that the "premier" badge will lead to nothing but hostility.

It has already been suggested that we do not identify what level of membership any one person has exactly for the reasons quoted and I support that wholeheartedly.

The extra cost is not for better membership, but for being able to load more images in the gallery. To be honest I think the current load limit is fine. I guess most people who bought the "Premium Gallery" membership were just donating under another guise.

We seem to have, eventually, got to the point where Jorge has some clear options and Joe's suggestion seems to be finding fairly wide support. 🙂

The weather has just picked up here and there are some nice clouds. I will give work another 20 minutes and then its out with the dog and the cam. Its been an interesting debate, but it will be nice to get back to photography, Leica bashing, politics, religion ...................... 😀

I agree with Joe's proposal of a two tiered membership.
I subscribed the $25 gallery upgrade the day I found out about it and I'm willing to pay even more for a yearly subscription, but I really liked the classifieds the old "informal" way.
If there's any other way to raise funds (in a continuous fashion) I'm more than willing to participate, but please don't turn the classifieds into a small scale evilbay!

GID, understood just adding my voice. Thanks.

Just some quick thoughts:

Obviously this Jorge's site and he can do what he wants BUT

If there is to be a paid membership scheme should RFF adopt an open book policy to its accounts so that everyone has a clear idea of what it takes to run a site like this and where the money goes? Perhaps even a comittee to conduct future competitions with prizes out of excess funds etc.

If this is a community then a paying membership should have at least some say in where their money goes. If its going to be a straightforward commercial site then the community just become customers. If we are at the stage where rff is to become a subscription site. Jorge (and the moderators) should have a clear idea of what they want the site to be in the future and express those ideas to us all. It is clear that change is inevitable and that could be a good thing but it needs to be handled carefully
