New film from Kodak!

I'd like an Ektar 400 and 800.
I used Fuji Realla (100) in the past, not Portra though. (IE: Great IQ Color films)
Since I have f/2 or faster lenses....a general purpose fast Color Neg. film with great Color and great IQ is always welcome... Will it beat my 14mp DSLR in finer grain and Detail? Maybe, but that's that the real reason I am taking up film again. The RF Cameras are much simpler, and in many ways, a 3 lens kit takes up much less space, and then I can use a small waist pack to carry it all!

The average user takes pictures with a cell phone. I don't gauge what photographers need by the average user.

My vote goes to Ektar 400. I don't need a Portra 1600.....but I would like a Fuji Pro 1600 material.

Have you ever checked the aftermarket stuff available for old Land Rovers and Jeeps? Gosh, those things are 50 years old and manufacturers come up with new bumpers on a daily basis. They must be all crazy!

There are hundreds and thousands of film cameras out there that are getting used by photographers. Just because a technology is "old" doesn't mean it's obsolete. It makes perfect sense to introduce new products for "old technologies" and I applaud Kodak for doing so!

Really hoping this "new" film is in fact Ektar 400. I've been pining for a really good high-quality, 400 ASA, yellow-boxed prosumer, color negative film ever since Kodak took away 400 UC. Fingers crossed.

My guess is that they want to combine their film business into a couple of films that are reasonably good at most things. That way they can still profit from whatever is left of the analog photography market and try to make money from the digital side.
 
All this talk about Kodak needs us to buy the film is crazy. The Lord of the Rings trilogy was shot on 6 million feet of film... 1800 kilometers of the stuff, and that is just three movies. We are, in the grand scheme of things, just the red headed stepchildren of the motion picture industry. If they go all digital we are in trouble.
 
It's good to see Kodak overhaul its lineup. Sorry to see some favorites bite the dust.

But the fact that they're looking at how film scans is a nod that digital and film can co-exist with perhaps some tweaks to the film product to make it better.

One of the photographers at work has shifted entirely to digital and brought in his mini-hoard of film. I freed 10 rolls of expired Tri-X. Hey, why not? It was there for the taking.

I also got a 10-roll brick of expired TMax 3200, which has turned out to be fine.
 
Again, Kodak builds the M9 sensor and releases new films every year : New TMax 400 with very fine grain, new Ektar dedicated to 'old style' colors and now a new one again. I heard rumors about the end of production of the Ilfors HP5+, but the Tri-X is cheaper and cheaper. IMO, Kodak is doing a great job for many photographers.
 
If it would be Ektar 400 it may be for me a hard choice between Provia 400X and Ektar 400 for travel (slides on the light table versus wider dynamic range) for my R3A.
 
Someone actually said "yawn?" This forum is what it is because of film. Are we supposed to only be discussing the M8 and onward?

This is good news, even if i'm not likely to ever use the new film. If it's a new TMax-something, i'm still going to stick with Plus-X and Tri-X. If it's a color film, cool.

Dear Kodak,
What i wish you would do is offer a service, sorta like you used to do with Kodachrome processing.... Where we could send you digital files and you'd output them to film. Maybe scan them, as well. We can get that now, as certain pro labs/service bureaus can output to film recorders, but the number of labs doing that is diminishing, and the service itself is awkward. I'd love to be able to upload files to a very streamlined interface, and get back a nice yellow envelope in the mail with 4x5s and a CD. And i want a choice of Ektachromes, Portras, Plus-X and Tri-X, please.

I get to shoot digital and keep control over that workflow, and you get to manufacture and sell film as well as maintain your brand suite as well as the inference that the film 'look' is still superior. Win-win, right?

Okay, call me a dreamer. But, they said i was stupid when i kept posting on dpreview that dSLRs should have a Black and White mode so that we could review shots in monochrome on the LCD.... One day, i will be recognized for the visionary that i am. One day! You'll see!
 
While we are still on the subject of film....who can process and scan (high rez..not the low rez you get from the drugstore/dept store scans) to disk my Ektar film and not charge a mint?

depends what your definition of mint is, but I have been happy with NCPS - the outfit that Ken Rockwell uses. I don't think I have used them for Ektar, but I have done B&W, slides and print film in 35mm and 120. It's about $5.50 to process the film (no prints) + $12 for high res scan of the entire roll (roughly 5,000 x 3,000 pixels). I have been pleased with all aspects of their service including communication and customer service.
