Hey it's available and indeed the discrete mode now works on the original M8. Doesn't help too much as the original shutter release is FAR louder than the wind-on sound.
So you now get "KLUNK... (gap) ...whisper"

Still - it's better than it was I suppose; the initial release sounds less "cameray"

DISCREET. Come on. Has everyone lost it? Even the l-camera email had 'discrete'.

Well, the discreet mode is discrete

My thoughts exactly ... a complete non event for me I'm afraid!

well in french it is discret or discrète, in Spanish discreto so I understand why there might be confusion for some members and even within Leica ... which by the way, spelled it wrong in French in the firmware menu ...an "armement' is discret, not discrète ...DISCREET. The M8 menu has it as 'discreet!'

Depends on what you intend to use it for ... in meeting or churches, you are probably right. Yet for street work, this is an improvement as the shutter is not too cameray (as said above), people don't assimilate it to a camera and it blends in Urban sounds. It was more the length of the sound that finally brought attention to it IMO.My thoughts exactly ... a complete non event for me I'm afraid!![]()

Well, discrete means separated, and the release and wind-on are separated, and discreet means unobtrusive, and it is. Also the spelling 'discreet' is a 16th century variant on the original 'discrete' in the sense of unobtrusive...

Yes, yes, yes it's "discreet". I made a mistake. I've done 20 push-ups. Can we move on now?

I've come to the conclusion that there must be a variation in M8 shutter sounds ... seriously, mine sounds like someone smashing a walnut with a hammer and always has and after 8000 or so accuations it hasn't really changed!

Do you use a half-case ? I do and it does lower the sound as the leather probably isolates it a bit.I've come to the conclusion that there must be a variation in M8 shutter sounds ... seriously, mine sounds like someone smashing a walnut with a hammer and always has and after 8000 or so accuations it hasn't really changed!

I always use my Luigi half case ... without it it sounds like someone smashing pebbles!

Same here, I use the Luigi half-case. Compared to the R-D1's "cliiiick", I find the "kluuunk" to less high-pitched and by no way like smashing pebbles. More like a stapler I would say ...

Yes, yes, time to move on. I once had a teacher who kept writing 'Discreet Mathematics' by mistake... we would be hiding behind the curtains doing algebra ;-)

Also, I'm not installing this on my M8.1 until I get at least two weeks without someone saying "my shutter never re-cocked, my camera is on a trip to Germany"...

Just installed it and I don't find it bad at all. However, my shutter is upgraded so it doesn't have that stapler snap sound. In fact, if I remember correctly, it's a little softer sounding than my old M6....
so I guess you can add me to the happy list.
*although I'm not really sure yet when/how I would use this.
