I agree with Jody. When I log on to RFF I just look at the most recent threads. I don't care what category or sub-forum they are in. I honestly don't see the big deal about having so many specific sub-forums!
If anything I find it causes some topics to be buried and not get the proper visibility they deserve. Not to mention the confusion about which topic to post your new thread in.
No one will ever ask me but if they did I would say we should just have two separate categories: Gear Talk and Image Talk. Or something to that effect...
 
Absolutely not having a dig at anyone here, but is it possible that some members do not understand what a "rangefinder" is and how it works? Of course we can argue definitions, but I think it is accepted by the vast majority of members here that the term "rangefinder" implies a mechanical/optical device for determining distance, and in this context, fitted to a camera and usually mechanically linked to the lens for precise focusing. No autofocus system qualifies as a "rangefinder" in this context (so the fine Hexar AF and similar cameras are not a rangefinder). I can't think of a single rangefinder camera that relies on batteries for focusing. If this does not make sense to you, please read the article here which explains the difference between SLR and rangefinder focusing systems, and should clearly show that the excellent Canon G10 does not have a "rangefinder" focusing system, although it does have an electronic autofocus system (which is not a "rangefinder").

Ha! My eyesight is almost that bad already! I love my autofocus camera, but it's not a rangefinder! That's the point - this is the Rangefinder Forum. I enjoy the discussions here about all facets of photography, from the viewpoint of people who use and appreciate rangefinder cameras, but if it was up to me there would be sub-forums for the various rangefinder cameras, then a single sub-forum for all the non-rangefinder stuff! But luckily I don't have that responsibility so I'll just keep enjoying it as it is, and offering the occasional opinion. 😀

Rangefinders work by triangulation. Simple geometry. You measure the angles of two corners of a triangle. If the distance beween two corners is known and the two angles are known the third is easy to find. Since one corner is a known 90 degree angle the rest is easy. You should have understood the concept in your teens whether or not you still remember the formula involved.

The same comcept is used in celestial navigatiion.
 
Pretty strong rangefinder chauvinism here, supported by stultifying pedantry: c.f., triangulation. Quite funny really. Never mind that the Ricoh GRD2, for example, is a serious small sensor camera whose use relates more to the Leica M6 than to either SLR or P&S cameras. A new small-sensor or compact camera forum would make a lot more sense than having these interesting cameras relegated to the P&S forum.

Why? Do think discussions of G10s and LX3s will get lost in a sea of threads about digital Elphs and Coolpix?
I doubt there is much discussion about lesser P&S cameras.
This is all too silly!

My point why do users feel degraded because there camera is referred to as a point and shoot. SO funny to me. Why should one care. Just as some here think Leica or nothing else. As for me call my cameras what you want, but they are mine and I love them. The site as a search function so no thread should get lost in the sea.

Someone tried to convince me scale focus Konica C35 EF3 is rangefinder camera. Probably because many believe in rangefinder = vintage (again, EF3 isn't also exactly vintage).

What a buzz, though 🙂 I think, accessory rangefinder easily converts G10 into rangefinder camera, if AF isn't used. It's pretty useless if lens can not be focused, entering distance by pushing buttons but formally it qualifies, maybe.
 
I was very critical of all the new RFF forums when they were created a year or two back, but I'm now a proponent for one main reason - searching. The vB search tools are so bad that it helps to be able to limit searches to specific subfora and control the number of results.

Agree on the search engine. I prefer to use a Google search, with this syntax

" site:www.rangefinderforum.com keyword keyword etc "

That will search google for the keywords but only within the RFF site.
 
When Canon put a 35mm "full-frame" sensor in G10's descendant, then it can be upgraded to the "Serious Point'n-Shoot" sub-forum.

I keep wondering how someone goes from an M8 to a G10 and doesn't know the difference.

But then I'm just a hopeless camera-geek with more knowledge than ability.
