I have been reading the posts about what is the best point and shoot camera,
and I have now got a case of gas for one.

Sure, that's what the new pns forum needs, more slack-jawed, mouth-breathing wanna-be Leicaphiles who have a serious case of transference to Minox by way of their pocketbooks.

Just kidding!

But have you ever noticed? Minoxen are nearly as adamant as Leicapiles that the company and the product are the ne plus ultra of the camera world, and anyone who doesn't grok that is a bit of a thicky?

I'd say it fits quite well as a pns. I really am just kidding!

From the November 1995 issue of Pop Photo:" It is a 6 element, four group symmetrical design. " (ME: It is a classic Xenon design; the original F1.5 Summarit was a 7 element design which split the rear element into two weaker elements to acheive the higher speed).

"At F2.4 results were more than acceptable for wide-open aperture, and the sharpness increased at F4 through F8, the optimum range for this lens" (ME: now that is why it is called a Summarit! Softer wide-open for existing light portraits and sharp at F8 for outdoor shots)

"At F11 sharpness dropped to about the F2.4 level, and at F16 was slightly below performance at F2.4l". (ME: sounds like a nice lens for a Point&Shoot, especially for one that does not use aspherics).

This is not a cheap camera; if you can get one for a good price, it is Leica's Posh Point and Shoot, to compete with the Nikon's. If you want a classic lens on a Point&Shoot and get something for a LOT less money, the Leica Mini and Mini II have 35mm F3.5 Elmars. They are good performers and will probably cost you ~10% of the Mini-Lux.

I guess the Minox classifies as a point and shoot, as it has a fixed focus lens and fixed aperture. The "C" and later were auto-exposure. I'll take the Tessina for the Sub-mini; TLR focus, F2.8 with manual Aperture control and shutter speeds. And it has a motorized film advance. But then, it is not a P&S. The Minox is.

heh great - a pns forum - without feeling guilty I can now post images taken with my pns collection.

My favourite is the :
Ricoh Gr1s (28/ 2.8 - aperture prioirty and P mode and plenty of flexibility including filters + wonderful lens)

There's an:
Olympus mju II (35/2.8 gem- P mode but water resistant and spot meter),
Yashica T4 (more contrasty, great lens 35/ f3.5),
Nikon 35Ti (f2.8 - funky analog jet pilot, great meter, have to program the flash off) ,
Nikon 600 (28/3.5 - not so shabby)
Fuji Tiara (nice 28 3.5- but flash fires almost always unless switched off)
Oly XA (35/2.8- good fun and nice lens)
Oly XA4 (28 f3.5 great, sharp contrasty, good macro mode.)
and finally my "new" Rollei 35 SE - just traded for an XA kit here on RFF.

My Stylus Epic LODD'ed on me the other night. It was training, but that still counts as line of duty. Survived the near drowning, but not a drop from chest height afterwards.

In the context of RFF, I think of a auto-focus/fixed-focus/zone-focus + auto-exposure with an optical viewfinder, non-SLR _film_ cameras (nearly all modern slr's have a auto-everything mode). I gather that we're not including digicams... or are we?

I have a Vivitar underwater cam & a Minolta Hi-Matic AF2 that fits the bill.

I do have a few cameras that don't fit the RF or P&S mold like my non-RF Retina & Retinette, Halina 35x.

BTW, the Oly XA is a proper RF, although I do tend to use it in a P&S manner, F5.6, focus at 3m, just point and shoot.
