New Foveon: Another milestone in image sensor technology?

X2 .........

Full Frame? You mean 8x10?
Please ... free us from the tyrany of a snap decision made some 90 years ago when film stock was conveniently grabbed and gelled into a film standard for small format.

We can move forward now ... really! :) APC gives more dof at the 35 equivalent field of view ... and that in a cam like this is nicer than larger frame, larger body, larger lens and larger cost.

This thread raises some good discussion. Unfortunately its been beat to death so many times already.

I use the Sigma/Foveon system. I have used Bayer systems also. I can tell you that I will not return to the Bayer system after using the Foveon sensor cameras. It is also true that Sigma falls short on the camera technology. But in my opinion it is more than made up for with the Foveon sensor quality.

How many other Sigma users will not go back to the Bayer based camera's after seeing what the Foveon sensor is capable of? I would wager plenty. I would also guess plenty of the Sigma detractors have never owned or used the Foveon based system.

I've followed the Foveon Sensor for a long time, since initial announcement. It is unfortunate that it is not in wider use. If I was not vested in lenses, it would be a consideration. Polaroid had the X530 (was that it?) on the market for a short while. Some pop up on Ebay, might get one just to play with.

Am I the only one who would be more interested in Foveon technology if it was employed by someone other than Sigma?

Sigma owns the Foveon technology. Mike Johnston said "I can't help but think that if Foveon technology were available freely to all cameramakers, the Bayer array sensor would be a quaint remnant of digital photography's history by now" and "is technology, they would use it annhiliate the rest of the camera market and stand astride our world like a conquering colossus."

Sigma have messed up an amazing opportunity and in the meantime the competition have run around them and pulled away.
