new FSU contest

I'd been thinking FSU body and glass only.
But since the body is just a box to hold film, I'll register another vote for FSU glass only.

Having just checked out last years thread concerning the contest , The issue of whether to use FSU body and lens or some other combination was discussed at length . Maybe it would be easier all round to just follow last years format with just some minor tweaking to help improve things and make life easier for the judges ?

Could anyone write up the regulations/ restrictions/ obligations for this "contest"?

I signed up but what's the aim of it?

In the context of a contest, I'd have to disagree here.

Certainly it's more of a challenge to shoot with an old camera of limited abilities than a modern camera. The experience and the challenge are important parts of using FSU cameras (from my point of view anyway).

Someone suggested April 1st as start date ... wasn't that the official release date of the new Fed 8 digital?

More importantly ... will it be allowed or will we have a separate catagory for 'FSU Digital?' 😕

I don't disagree that using the FSU cameras is a great part of the experience. I was just thinking FSU glass lets those who have the lenses, but not the bodies participate.
Entries could be divided into pure (body & glass) FSU and FSU lens-only categories.

.... some said that i included slr - like photos and that quality of chosen is not high enough. so i thought to include more judges. ....

I sympathise with you, Nzeeman. What is an SLR-like photo (or a TLR-like photo)? How on earth can you look at a picture and say it was taken with a particular type of camera?

There are always different schools favouring various pictorial styles, irrespective of camera type, and there are always objections after a competition.

You defuse objections by having clear rules. But there are always undisclosed rules that hit you when it's all over (take your pick from no sunsets, no stags at bay, no soot and whitewash, no visible grain or no absence of grain, no high key, no low key, no middle key, no emulations of folding camera pictures ....).

Objections are also defused by saying judge's decision is final. And by having more judges, as you suggest. Or again, by letting all forum members vote, or just participating members etc. If necessary in more than one stage: vote for a short list, and then vote again to rank the short-listed.

we tried to make agreement about having all members voting to make a short list - but every idea we had was too complicated. we could try and think something new again this year.
also Stephen still havent responded to my private message about opening a gallery for this contest so we will have to wait a little for this contest.
maybe he dont have time to read all messages so some of the moderators could ask him to open a gallery.

I've been thinking about this since my last post and have some ideas to share.
First: we might be getting a little ahead of ourselves here--has any one heard from our Bartender about this yet?
Second, blithely hoping that it(this contest) gets an OK, some further suggestions:
While I personally like FSU camera and FSU lens, I would rather include people than exclude. So my thinking is either FSU camera or FSU lens or both. Noted in the "details" of the photo. (And I would not look askance at some one who wanted to use FSU film in whatever gear they've got.😱 )
I think that having an "official" post images time frame is good. During that time, any one who wants to play, posts their photo to the gallery. That takes care of who's in or who's out. As I mentioned, I would like to see these photos posted blind if possible. I believe that would encourage voting for photos more than photographers.
When that time is over, we then have a collection of photos to look at. In the first contest thread, some one suggested voting by posting "I like it" comments to the photo and counting those. If there us a way to count unique comments, that would make tallying votes much easier. And eliminate having judges or polls. I dunno if that's possible with the software here or not.
If that's not possible, well I trust and like our moderators and New and Old Bartenders. Which, if I'm counting correctly is 5 people(so there is a "tie breaker if needed). Perhaps we could implore them to select a short list of 10 or 12 from the photos and then vote from that list?
Lastly, I strongly believe this should be for bragging rights only. The T-shirt I offered to make in my earlier post was meant to be no more than a symbol of those bragging rights.
I think our watch words should best be Simple, Inclusive, and Fun.

i asked stephen for OK 03-07-2007 i am still waiting for answer. but i think that there will be no problems - we had contest last year and everything was ok.

I'm in... I should have some results from my Kiev II/J-3 combo latter this week... If all is well, I'll keep shooting & enter anything worthy of sharing.
