Birthday coming up this month and I was debating on getting myself the new Pentax DSLR then I though I could save myself A LOT of money and get another FSU cam. Any ideas on anything really cool looking and fun to use?
or should I just get the DSLR? I kind of feel I get the DSLR I am going to but more pentax glass.... The body will be out date in 6 months and none of it is worth it. I hate it when I get an itch to buy gear.

Any ideas?

I'd say get some more FSU glass for the Zorki. The Jupiter 9 85/2 & Jupiter 12 35/2.8 can be wonderful lenses but it is best to buy from a dealer (I like fedkarather than ebay - especially for the 9. Plus you'd want a turret finder then... 🙂

Good luck!

Or buy the DSLR, but stay away from the upgrade cycle (if you can). I'm hoping I can be happy with the *istDS for several years, at least until Pentax bring out a 10 megapixel camera with shake reduction. In the meantime my old K-mount lenses seem to be appreciating in value (going by ebay prices),

Perhaps something a little larger, like an Iskra?

Or maybe something with a "motor drive" that will take all those LTM lenses like a Leningrad maybe?

Hmmm, only a couple of months before your wallet comes out again then 😀

Thats what I was hoping for. I have already have a few K-mount lenses.
....but I have a Konica Minolta A200 8 megapixel camera. I have had it for almost 2 years and it seems to be satisfying my digital needs.

I like my *ist DL a lot. The kit lens is not bad, just slow, for indoors or low light I toss on a vivitar 35 1.9 and go manual. It uses the SD card stash and rechargeable AA's from my other digitals so I'm saving there.

It's no RF replacement though, the mirror shake and size are bulkier than a CL and louder than a Hexar AF.

It's ironic though, this budget DSLR has some of the highest quality lenses out (and coming out) for it.

Amen to that. E.g., the DS + 77mm Ltd is a killer combination, IMHO. I am still hunting for the 31mm Ltd, after that I will probably stop buying gear.... 😉

yeah

yeah

Those ltd's are the best, but out of my price range:

I am keeping an eye out on some of the new non ltd zooms though, some kind of 16 or 18-40ish, and then the 50-150 and then I'm done with LBA, well until the LTD's hit the used market 😛

i would sell all your pentax gear and go canon, I don't mean to be rude but its MHO. I find I get my pleasure from film though and I have just bought a Contax Tvs point and shoot, I think ? online orders are a bitch sometimes.
the Contax T is very cool and looks good but they are hard to find and can be expensive.
the next thing I really want is a good film scanner.

I wholeheartedly agree with pcfranchina on this one. The Pentax *ist is awfully nice gear, won't cost an arm and a leg. Sure, the "upgrade" cycle can be prevalent, but really you can avoid that...heck I have a 5MP Minolta A-1 that serves me VERY well. I rarely have need to go much beyond 11x14 enlargements anyway. I mean...really just how many 20x30's and above does a person actually create? So...it seems to make sense to get the *ist, as it really is a beautiful camera from what I've seen and read. Then, just hold back on upgrades and use the heck out of your digital body.

For the times when I DO want a big enlargement, I swing over to my medium format gear, and there you go!

Then, what William said: stock up your FSU lenses with the money you've saved by not worrying about the upgrade cycle in the digital realm...you'll satisfy all your needs in a nice way. That Zorki 4K is a beautiful beast, actually.

It _is_ a zorki or fed (I've forgotten which) which has been tarted up to allegedly look like a rare Leica. It's worth what someone will pay for it I suppose. I wouldn't pay more than $50 for it, personally.

At least this seller is saying it's a copy.

You know, not to confuse you even further, but I tried a few Pentax DSLRs, and they are very nice. They could have used a little bit more thought in the user interface area (menus), but in general the camera is nice.

You could also get a Canon Digital Rebel and a K-to-EOS mount adapter...

But if you just stick to a Jupiter-8 and Jupiter-12, you'll be happy. I'm not a fan of the FEDs or Zorkis. I'd say get a Kiev. Just my twopence.
