New guy with a lot of questions

I wanted to say hello.

My name is Fabian and I am from Munich, Germany. That is why my English may be weird sometimes. Since 2 weeks I've got my first rangefinder ( and I love her ).
A Leica IIf with an Industar 22. I got my first roll of film back and was quite pleased. Though a lot of shots were underexposed. But it was the first time for me without light meter, so its not to bad. I want to say thank you in advance for your patience, because i got a lot of questions.

1: I can here a clicking sound on a few areas, and I was wondering if that comes from the leather or may the body be broken.

2: Is it normal that the stick (I don't know the word) where the spool is mounted on can be moved a little bit in every direction?

3: I am pretty sure there is a small hole in the shutter curtain, but the pictures where alright. So should I worry about that.

4: Does anybody know a place where they do leica service for a resonable price in Germany or at least Europe.

Thats it for know. I would appreciate any help I can get from you.

Hallo Fabian!

I use FED 1s, a Soviet near-copy of the Leica II, so I'll leave most of your points to the many infinitely better-qualified people on this forum...

But - I believe Oleg in Russia services Barnack Leicas. He has a splendid reputation (which I thoroughly confirm) and the cost is very modest by any reasonable standard. Follow the "Russian Cameras" link on the home page and you'll find his site.

Welcome.
I use the "if it works don't mess with it rule". If you are not getting light leaks, the shutter speeds are within tolerence and film is not wandering all over the place then I would just use it until I start to see a problem.

The Leica FAQ on "Liquid Electrical Tape" has some information about DIY for small holes in the shutter.

I just had my IIIF repaired, but that was only after the camera got to the point that it was unuseable. I got mine repaired by Essex here in the US but I would second Oleg of OKVintagecamera as a repairman. He has done some wonderful work for me on old russian cameras.

welcome!

I am not much of an expert, but I think that an old camera needs a little love and care to perform well, so sending it off for check-up is good, if you have the money. The worst part of it is the waiting... my IIIf hasn't come back yet from the repair, and now I am getting a bit anxious by all this waiting.

I was torn between leaving the camera as it was, and get a few rolls thru it or just sending it off for the repair shop, but I decided to get it done and then enjoy it, knowing it is as good as can be.

A Leica screwmount in good condition is a joy to use. 🙂

Hi Fabian, welcome to the forum. How do you know if you have shutter holes? You will see the effect if you do have them.
Beware of how quickly you can get them if you do the wrong things, I tested this last year: link
Other than that, I have a IIf too since quite recently and I love her. No first roll yet though...

1: I guess it would help if you could describe this in more detail..

2: yes, the takeup spool has some play (2-3 mm on mine)

3: how can you be sure? Best way to know would be to waste 2 frames of your next film: one for the first curtain (wind the camera, take off the lens and point the camera to a strong light) and another one for the second curtain (wind, take a shot with the lens cup on, and then as above)

4: haha!
scnr.. last time I've spent 300 Euros on a bad service in Germany..
