Hopefully we will have book one off to the publisher soon so we can see how that turns out. After that I know there is a lot of interest in folks wanting to participate in a second book. I am sure someone will start organizing that in time.

Ralph, I'm just curious... would it be possible for you to write down your experiences on this project? I think I may not be the only one who is interested to do a similar project for his/her own. I just returned from Mongolia, took loads of pictures (with my Eos 300D no less! Oh, horror!). We got some really great goodbye presents and some wonderful farewell parties, and we want to thank everyone by sending them a photo book with the family pictures that I took. Since it'll be a small run I think using Lulu.com might be the answer.
BTW, thanks for picking up the project! I'm really looking forward to seeing the final product.

RML, if you have access to a Mac, I can really recommend the iPhoto books. The come now in different formats with hard or soft cover, good price, perfect for a gift.

Hi Remy, that is something that Gene and I have mentioned and I definitly will do. My involvement of course has been just in organizing and collecting data, I think the publishing experience and Gene's work is most interesting. I think we will do this as soon as the book is off to the publisher.

I am newer here, but was kinda curious about this book project. You see... I found out about lulu through seeing that you guys are using them, and was thoroughly unimpressed with the quality of the prints in the book I made through them. Somewhere in between magazine and newspaper quality, at best. I was using their standard B&W service, though it appears they use the same paper for color. Maybe their color printing technique is better. I will probably explore that option next, then try their ISBN Plus printer service for quality testing.
Basically what I am trying to say here is... has anyone here had any first hand experience with lulu?
I would highly suggest someone do a small test book to figure out what service through them to use, and if they even offer adequate service...before going through the effort of getting everything into lulu's format and being dissapointed with the results.

Sounds like good advice to me Stephen. This all started to far back for me to remember the details, I don't how Lulu came up and if anyone had experience with them. Anyone remember or want to dig? I think Stephen has a good point.

As far as I could tell, as I tried to do some digging before commenting... the lulu idea all started cuz someone heard through email from someone else that lulu was good...
However, I may be wrong.
Also...before anyone suggests cafepress as an alternative, I am pretty sure they are worse. On their own website forums it was suggested that I not use their service for a photobook.
So all I can think of is that it was a problem with my files (highly doubtful) and the B&W service is ok or... going to have to test color service to see if its acceptable, and if not.. then test ISBN Plus service as it is a different printer and maybe better quality? I have a calendar I made through them on its way to me and hopefully here by weeks end. For that I anticipate much better quality.
For the book I can say that the cover was excellent, it was just all the images on the pages inside which were poorer quality. The book paper doesn't seem glossy enough for proper photobook use.

Stephen G made a good point. I read the Agreement on lulu.com:
"As a user uploading your work to Lulu, you retain your copyright in the Content. You do, however, grant Lulu the right to post, display, copy, sell, and distribute that content within the limitations you set during the online publishing process."
I'd want to know what those "limitations" are.....

I would too. I assume and hope its just a standard disclaimer, saying that if you're hiring them to to publish, distribute, and sell their they have the right to do so with your work so you can't sue them etc. etc.
Gene will have to respond, but I recall that early on in the process that all copyright remains with the individual participants.

Are there 2 other photographers who can submit the cecessary material sooner? I'd say whoever can get in a complete submission first is in, regardless of any list. This has gone on long enough. If no one can step up, then let's go with 23 photographers. And THANKYOU, THANKYOU! Gene and Ralph for your work on this! It will be worth it. You guys, and Joe for moderating, and Jorge for creating this site, should all be nominated as RFF Heros!
