New Leica Q2

Thank you Cal! You are my ONLY HOPE left! Mr. Leica does not seem to be interested in giving me a loaner Q2 to try out.

Leica is a follower on my gal's Fashion Blog.

Leica has lent me a 24-90 SL zoom for NYC Fashion Week two years ago.

If Leica is lurking on this thread, the hint is I really-really need a new SL2 and Q2. LOL.

Point of clarification: are the 35, 50, and 75 "modes" just framelines like the M series, or does the focal length fill the whole EVF? I believe I have read that the DNG file contains the entire 28mm but is displayed with crop marks. If it is just framelines, what's the point?
 
Sean Reid at Reid Reviews already has a longish review up. Sounds like a nice upgrade to the Q. The 35, 50, and 75 are crops of the full frame 28, but with 47 mp, even cropped, the files are pretty good size. He said the uncompressed raw DNGs are around 85-88 mp. I'm not sure I'd want to deal with files that big.

I've said it before, what is there not to like about the Q? Well, Leica done went and improved it, which is why I hardly ever buy an expensive item in its first iteration. Added another crop frame for portrait work, and upped the sensor resolution to compensate for the cropping. Man, those 28mm files must be monster big!


I'm pretty sure I'd have to upgrade my computer to be able to handle such a beast, but it would be worth it. The dust and weather sealing alone would make it worthwhile over the original. I can rationalize about such a high value purchase as it would save a lot in the short and long runs. It would have been better if the focal length had been determined by a MATE or WATE, but the crop framing simulates a MATE anyway, with the addition of 75mm, and you never have to drop a rear lens cap.


It's a full kit in one camera as far as I'm concerned. And that satisfies me as I won't have to go searching for three or four lenses to go with a camera body, and can travel with the confidence that it will be ready at a moments notice.


But I have to save up more money first. Dang price increases.

Thing is..you gotz to like dat...lens...a lot..to justify it..
And I'm not so sure..I like the nervy boke..or the way it draws people..big ole noses and all....or distorts either for that matter..or...a 28..pretending to be a 35/50/75..
And there is a review out there..comparing the 1st Q with the 2nd..and the 1st in some circumstances..looks better in low light..than the 2nd one..
But the weather sealing..and video quality...a well as the other upgrades..may make it worth it..

For the occasional use that I grab the Q, I don't need the upgrade. The IQ of the orig. is already excellent. If more mp's is an argument to allow for cropping and sloppy framing in the first place ... that's not really flying with me.😉
Weather sealing is nice to have, my "non-sealed" cameras (film M's) in the past and MM and M9 never had any issues in use. If it's raing cats and dogs I don't shoot outside.
 
As it happens I just today picked up a pristine copy of the first version and am seriously looking forward to giving it a proper try. I have read probably 20 or more online reviews over the past couple of weeks and based on those reviews I have already concluded that it is something out of the box (literally - you should SEE the presentation box this thing comes in). And in the couple of hours I have had my new camera in my hands I can see the image quality is superb - even just when viewed on the rear LCD. Plus this thing is hot, hot, hot. Just beautiful.

As I might have explained elsewhere on this site I was considering upgrading my M8 to an M (240) and found this particular Q when I walked into a store to view a 240 that I knew was on sale there. The beautiful condition of the Q almost sold it without any input from the salesman and little deliberation by me - the owner was selling it at a competitive price on commission through the store to have funds to get the Q2 which also helped much. Good luck to him this sale is a win win.

While the M 240 was and is very tempting, especially given the gamut of Leica M lenses I have in my possession, it seems to be accepted that quite apart from the obvious limitation of a fixed and comparatively wide lens the Q has some advantages in terms of ISO response and dynamic range over the 240. Plus, I reluctantly reached the conclusion that as much as I have loved to use Ms, I now struggle, courtesy of my eyes, to use them well and quickly. A camera with highly competent AF as well as MF has an obvious advantage in that department.

Would I like the Q2? Damn right I would but for now I am content.
 
I'm mainly a 28/35mm shooter. This covers 80% or more of my shooting. Occasionally I like a longer lens, 50 or even 75 maybe for just a shoulders and head portrait or to shoot some details.

Therefore I didn't buy the original Q. Now the possibility to crop from a 47 MP sensor to have a virtual 50 with reasonable quality makes it interesting. A good interesting move from Leica which I think will open the customer base. Nice to see Leica active with new proposals 🙂

Shall I buy it? I do not think so, cannot justify it for occasionally use, still happy with the M10 🙂

PS: just thinking for the very few times I need the 50/75 it will be easier for me to buy a pre owned T/TL2 with an M adapter, I already heave the EVF20...
 
A most expensive point and shoot, almost size of regular M.
A huge MP requiring newest computer..
Why not a zoom lens that offered various lens lengths?
I'd rather lose light than cropping image..
 
Back in 2016 I had a hard time deciding between a Q and a M-P 240. I went with the M-P, and to be honest I probably should have done the Q instead.

The new Q2 may be more than I can resist. But, I am probably going to wait and see if Leica does the obvious - an ILC version similar to the Q. The idea of a full frame EVF M mount body like a Q is intoxicating.

The Q files are already big enough for me.
Cropping down to 50mm is easy and the resultant 11x14 prints are quite good.

Advice: Pick up a used Q as soon as the price hits below $2.5K, which is 1/2 the price of a Q2.
The Q2 weather sealing is not a big deal for me.
My Q with its 1/2 case has been in rainstorms many times in the past 2 years with not a single hiccup. I've taped up the mic opening on top because I don't shoot video and that is the only major point of moisture entry.

Battery life? I carry a spare and have exceeded 500+ shots in a day.
The firmware upgrade makes the Q totally silent and the best streetshooter I've ever owned.
Buy a used Q, save $2.5K and take some nice vacations.
