New M8 Owner--Filter Questions--Summitar Related

I finally did it and bought a M8. I've got basically one or two questions about the UV/IR filters. What happens if you don't use filters? If it's a huge deal IQ-wise I will buy them. So far I will need 40.5 and 43mm. But I'm curious to know what users did for a filter for the Summitar?

Long story short, I have two Nikkor LTM lenses that take a 34.5mm filter--I'm assuming there are no 34.5mm UV/IR filters. But I do have an adapter that fits on the lenses and allows me to use filters for a Summitar. Any kind of stepup ring from Summitar size to say 39mm or 40.5mm?

I made a series VI adapter for a Summitar using a Summitar Typa A filter, busted out the glass, and glued a series VI holder to it.

A Summitar to 39mm adapter is available.

The Summitar has a very low IR shift, I think it is within the F2 DOF marks. So softening of the image will be minor. There will be some color shift of leaves, and some synthetic fabrics. I tend to use the IR filters on most of the lenses.

Thanx Brian. I don't own a Summitar, but have an adapter that mounts on to A36 lenses, ie. Elmar 5cm, Summaron 3.5cm, and the Nikkors I mentioned. The adapter allows for Summitar filters to be used on these lenses, but I found the Summitar to E39 Filter adapter on ebay. My one concern is vignetting with too many adapters stacking with the UV IR filter. So, I've contacted SK Grimes to see if they can manufacture a stepup adapter from 34.5 to either 39 or 40.5.

Now, onto coding my lenses 🙂

I bought that adapter yesterday. Soon I will see if it will stack fine with my other adapter and filter and not vignette.

Just an update. The E39 UV/IR filter, SNHOO replica, and the SOOTF work perfectly for all my A36 lenses. Elmar 5cm, 3.5cm Summaron, and both LTM Nikkor 28mm and 35mm f/3.5. No vignetting on the wide end.

The other issue is coding. All lenses need the locking mechanism removed to be used on type II adapters that are coded. The dollar drain continues :bang:

For the theorists amongs us, yes. Because IR-light isn't refracted the way visible light is (you must focus closer up for a sharp image when using an IR-pass filter), the sharp visible light image is superimposed by an unsharp infrared image, theoretically causing some blur.

In practice, you wouldn't notice, because this infrared image is underexposed by a factor of 10 - I base this on the fact, that I must expose an IR-pass image (720nm) in bright sunlight at 1/90s at f5.6 with ISO640 whereas an unfiltered image would need 1/640 at f11 with ISO640.

You can get an original Summitar filter with screw-on retainer ring. Unscrew the retainer ring and swap the glass with Leica E39 UV/IR filter glass.🙂
