New Mamiya 6 and 50mm lens, hello to the forum!

I just purchased a used camera from a fellow forum member, Prav66.

Everything was as he described, with fast fed ex shipping.

I have yet to run film but otherwise the camera looks great.

This is my first rangefinder, so I know there will be a learning curve and a lot of fun.

My interest is b&w landscape. I also shoot an rb67, 35mm and digital.

Just developed a roll of Arista edu ultra 400 bw.

Using AE, my photos were uniformly overexposed, but focus seemed sharp.

I need to compare my light meter to the camera setting to see what the deal is.

Too bad I did not have instant gratification, but this is a new camera for me!

I use a 6 and 6MF. I always used a handheld meter for determining exposures. I find the camera meter can be way off. The Mamiya RF metering does not have a good reputation.

BTW, my avatar was taken with a 6 in Tibet.

The meter in the Mamiya 6 looks through the finder rather than through the lens. I suspect the design limitation was due to the collapsible lens mount.

If you hold your hand over the finder to shade it, you will notice the difference it makes when metering. I have not yet overexposed a shot, but I have one or two underexposed shots from when the sky occupied a large portion of the frame. Like Finder says, one way of getting around this is to use a handheld meter. I personally prefer using exposure compensation in tricky lighting situations.

I compared the exposure the 6 came up with, to my Sekonic 358, reflected. I believe the meter is working acceptably.

Once I develop the Delta 100 I took today, I will know more.

Please take a look at some Epson 4490 scans from my Mamiya 6 negatives. Film was Delta 100.

I know looking at scans is different than looking at prints, but I would appreciate any comments on exposure or focus. Scans are level adjusted only.

I qm used to shooting my rb, and I am finding that AE exposure on the 6 makes negative that is harder to print. As others have said, I guess I will have to rely on a meter.

A comment about the way the camera works: Why is it that the camera can detect that the lens cap is on, but still let's you take a shot? Edit: I thought the camera could detect this, but evidently it can not. Question retracted.

The scans look great. They are very high contrast, which is how I like it. I've heard that slightly overexposed negatives are often difficult to print but make excellent scans. Perhaps that is the case here.
