Hi everyone. Registered a while ago but basically new to this forum.

Quick history : started with DSLRs which I used for quite a while. Took a chance on a Leica M8, which did make very nice pictures but was more temperamental than a particularly bad tempered two year old during tantrum time. Sold it after about 6 months of use and am now using a Digilux 2 which is far less troublesome and is a nice, nice camera.

However, having read several raving reviews about the X100, I'm seriously considering it in place of the Digilux 2 (I use a DSLR for my other camera, for sports, etc). I've seen some excellent pictures taken with the X100, and the hybrid viewfinder is pretty cool (tried it out in store).

Has anyone used the Digilux 2 and can comment on how the two compare? Clearly the X100 is going to be ahead on the technical specs, but how about things like handling? The D2 has a zoom (a nice one, too), but the EVF isn't much fun to use, and when I first looked through the X100's viewfinder it was like night and day in comparison. 35mm is a decent length for most things, so I don't have such a problem with the single length lens.

The D2 has many good points, but the AF is way slow, the battery life is pretty weak and it only goes up to ISO 400 (and using it there is noise suicide). I've heard astonishing things about the X100's low light and high ISO capabilities.

Only downsides I've really come across are the menu system (apparently confusing) and manual focus (apparently incredibly slow and no fun to use...and I enjoy using MF)

Bottom line is, I'm looking to be talked into or out of selling the Digilux 2 and getting the X100 in its place :D

Please inform and entertain me!

I was disappointed in the manual focus with the X100 but got over it pretty quickly because the rest of the camera is a pure delight ... issues with my particular example aside!

The menu system is pretty dumb but like anything you can learn it and be familiar with it eventually. The camera's manual controls, aperture/shutter speed and EV compensation are brilliant and more than make up for the menu shortcomings.

As for the viewfinder ... well, you've already sampled that so no need to comment. :D

The pics in this thread really showcase the camera's abilities IMO.

Get a good price on the digilux 2 while you can, the X100 is much better camera. I am sure you have done the research and just need a shove in the right direction.

Get the X100

I can't comment on the Digilux 2 but I do really enjoy my X100- If you have the $ worth a try. These are still selling on ebay over msrp so pretty much a risk-less transaction.
