After being re-introduced to films for the first time in 6 years I made the switch to digital by the atrocious yet somehow good Holga, I noticed that the shop I bought a Holga from has an entire wall full of old cameras: Rangefinders, half-frames, folding cameras, SLR's, TLR's, box cameras etc. it made me think about getting back in to film more, and to find an everyday alternative to the holga (the cost for the film + processing & scanning the 120 films were getting a bit expensive).
so I after some amount of online research, I went back to the shop and picked up a MIR with a Jupiter 8 50mm lens, the guy threw in a B&W film as a "christmas special"
I spent the rest of the next day wondering around, taking pictures with it and I have to say it feels a lot more personal than my DSLR, takes a lot more care & attention and the best part is that people seem to be a lot less suspiscious of someone with an old rangefinder around his neck than a "stalker's/terrorist/child molester's DSLR".
unfortunately, when it comes to rewinding the film, the film seem to have stuck somehow, so I took the camera to the photoshop and had them open it up and remove the film in their darkroom, I loaded a second roll of film (crappy US$ 1/roll chinese-made film) and the film advances and the shutter cocks fine but it doesnt seem to want to release, I'm going to be taking it in to the shop monday, lucikly the guy offers a 1-month warranty.
I'm not really peaved, the camera's double my bloody age, these things are bound to happen, and the guy at the shop's nice.
oh and I'm in Thailand, BTW.

Try turning the collar which surounds the shutter release about 1/4 turn clockwise. That should allow you to rewind the film.

I did that, the film rewound a bit (about 6-7 turns) then it got stuck.

Ok problem solved, apparently a screw holding the spindly bit with the spokes just before the take-up spool (I have been away from film for awhile, forgot what all the bits are called) was loose and that threw everything out of whack.
the guy spent 20 minutes looking at it while I was playing with the other cameras he has in stock before he laughed out and said how much of an idiot he is for not noticing somthing so simple.
but it works and I have a perfectly good film cam now so: YAY!

yeah, apearantly according to the guy, there's some sort of a film revival here in Bangkok the past year or so. the guy said that he couldnt get stock in fast enough. although I think the fact that films are dirt cheap here may have somthing to do with it.and yeah I'm surprised to find a shop too. but mind you, he sells most of his stuff online and to get to his "shop" you have to go to this office building, exchange your ID for a visitor pass, go to the 11th floor and walk in to the deepest parts of the building, pass a bunch of offices that people are doing fairly serious looking business in. and among these offices lies a small room with one wall occupied by a cabinet filled with old cameras and a guy sitting there watching the TV or cleaning out his new stock making it ready for sale it all seems a little.... surreal, its like walking out of an office building in to a completely different place.
oh and I love Lucky colour super 200 films, the people's film for the people's camera I suppose.

Hm... I was curious about the B&W Lucky SHD 100 film on e-bay, half price of Efke KB 100 (and I live in Croatia, efke is made here), however, had some bad experience with Gekko films that Efke packed for a while...

we don't get their B&W here, just their colours and so far I like it. gives a vintage feel to the picture (well, to me any way).

Memories Like the Corals of my mind....... Boy! Those pics sure bring back pleasant memories of all the time I spent in Thialand, I was there last year for a month and was a english teacher in Thailand back in the late 90s for a year or so. God do I ever love the place. Great people Great food Great Photos and Great scenery and Great ........ Use your imagination! Hope to go back next year- Sawadee Krup -Michael

Those are some nice shots. I particularly like the second color shot. Such a colorful and varied place! Good choice on the Jupiter-8 and the Mir.
