It took me 18 months plus getting hired there, but I finally got my long term Epson RD-1 review up on photo.net.

The RD-1 is news for a lot of folks, but as it is still an interesting camera I figured I'd publish it anyway.

There haven't been issues in the past with mentioning photo.net, and we've never minded anyone mentioning RFF over on PN. But if there is an admin issue with posting this, somebody please email me after it is deleted.

I read it a few days ago, and I sometimes go back and read your old "120 minutes" article. So do you miss your R-D1?

Absolutely. In fact, I was just trolling through the RFF classifieds trying to figure out how much it would cost me to get another one. At the time though, it was just too much money for me to have tied up in a camera that I wasn't using to make money. That cash needed to go into a 5D body (and it did).

The 5D is wonderful in many ways. But now that I am not doing as much freelance stuff I wish I had the RD-1 again.

Hee hee ... been there, done that, got the T-Shirt. I sold my R-D1 when I moved to the M8 and then ended up buying another 3 months later because I missed it. Not that it was better than the M8 but because I missed it for it's own unique character.

Resistance is futile ... :D

Thanks, Josh, good work. Have put it to my R-D1 bookmarks.

To Villain2 - the few rare situations I used a flash was with a Nikon SB20, low voltage, no problems.

I used a simple old vivitar auto flash with a bounce head for most stuff. Every so often I would use a nikon SB26 that I had around, mostly for the manual flash ability.

great review... i've been thinking about gettin an RD-1 for quite some time now... and your review only makes the urge greater.

Hey,
This came as a surprise to me in your review:

"Cosina/Voigtlander will come out with a 21/2 that only covers the RD-1's APS-C size sensor."

I haven't heard this before. Is this project still on? When can we expect to see the lens?

/T

Good work, Josh.

I've kept my R-D1 as a backup body for my M8 but your review reminded me that it deserves to be taken out and used for its own merits!

But my understanding was that Epson announced that they HAD in fact sold out the R-D1(s) run a few months back.

Josh: I found the review extremely well written and comprehensive. I think you've done a great service to any and all who might be interested in a digital RF.

Tolumne: I don't think Josh said CV would release a digital-specific 21...

The largest issue could be addressed with the release of a 21/2 "digital specific" lens from Cosina/Voigtlander
(emphasis mine)

Yes, that was just wishful thinking on my part. The R-D1 would so much more fun with a fast 35mm equiv lens.
