New owner of M4-2 ... what meter?

Sekonic L-208 for a small handheld meter. I used to use an L-308 but found it to be too big to carry around when I don't like to have a bag with me.

Yeah, I like the 208 too, but for me handheld meters don't gel with Leica's so I just ordered the VC meter. Hoping it to be more practical, faster. And besides, it looks cool :)

I love my VC meters. For a bit more flexibility I like the Gossen Luna-pro Digital. Not tiny but a great meter, wear it around my neck.

Lots of great choices, kind of a personal choice to say which is "best".

Like most of us who have been shooting for decades - I have a large collection of meters - and some still work!
Everything from Gossen SBC, Sekonic 308's, Gossen digital, Digisix and more. The one that I use for checking my guess work tends to be Digisix - attached to my vest, and always along.
The Gossen SBC's tend to be used for set-ups or more precise metering - but it is almost 1/2 the size of a M!!!!!
You will probably find that if you stick to one film or film speed - the meter gets used less and less. Mainly to check a guess or for tricky light situations.
The Leica MR meters are convinient, but require Mercury batteries and they tend to scratch up the top of the camera. Nice 18 degree angle though - perfect for shooting with a 90mm lens.
The VC meters are good - again, I use them as handheld meters - rather than leave them on the cameras.
Unless you are shooting narrow latitude slidefilms - metering is not that critical. Color Neg films have a huge latitude as have black/white medium speed film. It is easy to get caught up in metering madness to the detriment of taking pictures.
The M's are compact cameras - why add something that is almost the size of the camera just to get the exposure?

I like the VC meter too but it's so small I'm afraid of dropping it when using it handheld.

I was considering making a small handle for it with a cold shoe at the top. Like a Hassy base handle but smaller. :)

I recently purchased an M2 and probably the best type of meter to get for it would be a hand held Gossen Digisix. This meter is VERY easy and quick to use. I also have a MR meter but I would never mount it on top of the camera. Not only would it make the camera bulkier and dorkier it would definitely mess up the top plate with scratches.
