Dan, I recently bought a 105mm f3.5 lens for my Mamiya TLR because it's reputed to be sharper than the 80mm f2.8. Even more recently, I've seen a couple of comments on the net claiming that it's a Heliar design, which would be cool if it's true. Have you seen anything confirming or refuting this?
Haven't used it enough, but like it enough that Heliar or not, I'll keep it. The Mamiya kit kills my GAS for anything else in medium format.
Thanks for the interesting post.

The Cooke triplet, the Tessar and the Heliar were the Holy Trinity of early 20th Century lenses.
All three were variations of the triplet theme and have individual signatures. They really come into their own in large format photography . The classic trio still perform nicely in 6x9 medium format.

I only noticed the other day that my P&S Sony digital has not just a Zeiss lens (I just like them), but is a vario tessar. Could that mean a zoom triplet?
