FYI: Reflecta has announced a 120 format scanner for june 2011. As they basically do rebranded stuff - at least in the past - maybe it comes out somewhere under another name sometime.

It's there in English as well, but last time I looked, with pretty a strong German accent.

I think you can scan into Linux using Vuescan, but I'm not 100% sure.
I spoke with the VueScan marketing director yesterday and she said that our OpticFilm scanners were in fact supported under Linux, Mac and PC.

Now that sounds very interesting. It would be interesting to know who is actually going to produce these scanners.
Mark - does Plustek has anything to do with this scanner? Or does Plustek has any plans in similar direction? If you can not answer the question it is of course OK. Just that MF film users are getting a bit stressed since the Coolscan 9000 was discontinued (speak about last man standing) ...

I can't really comment on future product direction or OEM agreements. Sorry.
I can tell you that we are well aware of the need for a high quality, reasonably priced 120 film scanner.

Marks, I fully understand. Your second sentence is all I would ask for right now. Thank you.

I only shoot medium format now but I have a load of 35mm negs from the 80's and 90's. I want to get a decent scanner to make good scans of the best of my 35mm images. Once I have done the scans I'd sell the scanner as I wouldn't need it anymore.
I'm looking at getting the Plustek 7600i Ai - is there any reason why I wouldn't be able to sell it (such as: do I have to register the SilverFast software before I use it, which could mean that someone else would be unable to use the software)?
Cheers
Simon
PS. I would DEFINITELY be interested in a decent 120 scanner!!

You are aware that on Plustek 35mm scanners you still mess with holders, right?I wouldn't hold my breath for a scanner with automatic feed (especially 120), it will complicate the scanner and add to the cost tremendously.
If the holder is small and the scanner is smaller, that may not be so bad.

Mark,
Thanks for participating in the discussion. Add me to the list of photographers who desire a dedicated 35/120 film scanner.

If I shot more 135 I'd already own a 7600, but 120 is 90% of my film.

Hi Mark,
Secondly, it is of concern that there is no mac driver available for download from your site for the 7600, and wonder what the reasoning behind this is. Perhaps you might suggest to your support people that they might look into addressing this. As you can imagine, the mac is a popular platform among photographers, and cd's are easily lost.
Lastly, am I to take it that in conjunction with the mac Plustek 7600 driver, that I can use Vuescan with the 7600. I know Vuescan is not a Plustek product, but compatibility with Vuescan is an important issue for a lot of current or potential Plustek purchasers given that Vuescan and Silverfast are the only game in town, and that many people already own Vuescan.

Is Plustek 7600 Se/Ai not Mac compatible? That would be a deal breaker since I switched my workstation to iMac last year, looking for a scanner upgrade from Epson 4990 pro.

It works with the Mac; I have a 7400 which I use with my (PowerPC) Mac. I just installed the SilverFast software from the bundled CD and started scanning.

Yes as it was stated, the OpticFilm scanners work with Mac. The interface to the Mac OS and Photoshop on the Mac is provided by the SilverFast software.

Thanks. I saw 7600Ai on newegg for $429.99, tempted, a good bargain it seemed.

can someone explain to me the difference between the SE and AI versions? It seems to be software? What would I loose with the SE version?

Sure!
The 7600i Ai comes with Lasersoft Silverfast Ai Studio http://www.silverfast.com/show/silverfast/en.html and the 7600i SE comes with Silverfast SE Plus: http://www.silverfast.com/show/silverfast-se/en.html.
Here is a chart that compares all versions of the SilverFast software:
http://www.silverfast.com/comparison/scanner/en.html
And here is a summary chart of the differences:
http://plustek.com/usa/products/opticfilm-series//opticfilm-7600i-se-v.s.-opticfilm-7600i-ai.html
The Ai version gives you much more control over imaging and dust and scratch removal parameters as well as IT8 calibration.
The hardware is exactly the same.

Note the 7400 is considerably cheaper IF you only want to scan black and white negs. (You loose the infrared "muck" removal" which is ineffective with B/W negs)
7600 Ai £342
7600 SE £253
7400 £184 (includes SE) Now that's a bargain.

If you don't need infrared muck removal because you are very competent with Photoshop after using it for 14 years, would the 7400 deliver the same quality? I'm on a tight budget but cannot live with my current scanner, it's fine for proof scans but nothing more.

Hardware wise it is the same scanner except that it doesn't have the IR channel for dust and scratch removal.
Software wise, the 7400 uses the same software as the 7600i SE so see my post above to see if you can live with the difference.

I was thinking the 7600, which I own, has a new light source that doesn't require warm-up and is more consistent.
That's why I bought the 7600...not for software.
