Macintosh does a good job of "price fixing" illegal or not. There has to be some way around the legal reasons given here. After all, a manufacturer should be allowed to set the cost of their product.

It's not price fixing. a retailer technically can sell a new Leica product for anything it wants, but under the current agreements Leica USA is under no obligation to continue to supply the retailer with new products. In this regard, I'm told that Leica/Leica USA are following the strategy of some other product -- so it's been done before.
And if doubt the varacity of these observations, just check some of the internet sites for Leica retailers. They are listing MSP as the price, and they are not saying "call me" for a lower price.
No doubt, this will force most folks to opt for used or grey market.

Sure, their prices are standardized at their own stores (both the online stores and their brick-and-mortar retail stores), but that's okay since they own and operate all of them; however, they don't force independent dealers to sell at any given price point. If you go to any of the (few) remaining independent Apple dealers, they'll often offer to sell you non-customized Apple products at a small discount (their way of encouraging you to buy with them instead of direct from Apple). However, since their profit margins are so thin, these independents can probably only afford to reduce the price by $50 to $100 on a computer that normally retails through Apple for $2,000+ with free shipping (that used to be the case around here, before one of the only remaining independent dealers went under recently).
