New RFF Under Construction - take a look

When I visit rangefinderforum, I want to see the latest discussion. I think the old style of the landing page it was better at that. My way to get back as close to the previous version is to use the following link. It only works while logged in at the moment.

https://rangefinderforum.com/search..."},"exclude_type":["vBForum_PrivateMessage"]}

Is there a way to have this more easily?

I also have disabled the signatures and avatars and that has improved readability by a lot.

The resulting view with this search is exactly (or nearly!) what I had with the version of the site. Currently, I cannot even see how to replicate or derive the above link result. I'm also seeing RFF using only 54% of my 27 inch display! HELP!!!

I like a dark background, but not black. Dark grey as in the old rangefinderforum would be excellent. Black/white is very tiring for the eyes. And yes, please remove the facebook/twitter buttons.

And please explain how to upload photo's! It seems to be extremely complicated.

Erik.

A minor niggle really, but on the old site when looking through 'Unread Items' I was given the option at the bottom of the page to "mark all read".

Now I seem to have to go back to the main Forum page to do that. Can that be changed back please?

Try the “Latest Activity” button, ...

Uh, where is the Latest Activity button? It's not obvious, at least to me, that is.

Where did my avatar photo go? It shows when I view my profile, but not if I post.

I re-uploaded it and it started working as expected.

Yes I was looking for that also. There's a "Latest Activity" at the top of the page which is thread dependent I believe. I think FORUM -> "New Topics" will return latest thread activity. A bit of a mess... I dunno about this new interface. Too much administrative debris as Tufte would say. Really struggling...

One thing I just noticed, I posted a response in a thread and attempted to include two fairly small images and it said I had exceeded some limit which appeared to be to be absurdly small for a photo site.

I worked around it using IMG tags, but still, that will be an issue for those who post images regularly.

Like several others on this thread, I prefer the dark theme. However, I'm unable to make it stick.

Each time I think that I have managed to do so, when I return later, I find that it has returned to the default. Any suggestions?

I'm not happy.
What i did often: place a photo in the Gallery, copy the link, insert the link in the 'insert image pop-up', take out the -med part, and I would get a reasonable result. Using external hosting is not future proof.

Now all i get when I use the old manner, is thmbnail sizes (500 pixels or so)
Also when I drag/drop, I am left with thumbmails. Whatever I choose. The blackbox (popup) image is small too.

--> Please instruct me how to get good posts.

Stripped the -med part still small thumbnail. Pop-up is small.

Just a heads up, the link to the "Classic Camera Repair Forum" (archived) doesn't work. It says contact the administrator.

Call me a grumbler, but ... I dislike the new format. Change for the sake of change. Before this, you had a nice, simple format, and I could easily move into the various forums and easily find things. Now - long lists, many screens to go to, needless activities just to get to what I could easily get to by merely opening the site.

The dark theme is a plus, easy on the old eyes. But you had that before, so it's not a newby. I've logged in now, and changed it to black. Will it stay?? Not good if I have to do it every time I revisit. But I'll see how it goes.

As I type this, my screen freezes up (FOUR times now) and I get an error message. I click on it and it disappears and I can return to my typing. Annoying, but only a minor glitch - I hope.

Yeh, sure, I'll get used to it. But it's annoying.

Anyway, time will tell and we'll see how it goes.

The new layout isn’t “change for the sake of change” but change for the sake of modern software with a support process.

As things here get better, sometimes they get worse. I no longer have to log in twice to get it to stick, but the Home page displays that "Invalid Url" message until you navigate off it and then back again. I also see active emogies at the bottom of the screens now, but some of them are not active. (running the latest WIN10/Firefox)

the new software appears to be fully responsive with a max width of about 2400 pixels, the active area won't increase in size if the window is stretched larger than that

Well, so far, my opinions on the site update are mixed.
  • The "default vB5 Style" works fine for me although the font sizing is a bit small.
  • I can't seem to find things as easily or consistently as I did on the old site. For whatever reason, the syntax of what buttons to push to get the the latest stuff and updates to existing threads constantly eludes me.
  • My avatar is missing, and the system doesn't seem to want to accept it anymore although it shows it when I got to user preferences.
There are other things that seem either not yet implemented or just not finished. Hopefully they're all just "not finished" and will return soon. :)
