New set of photographs from The Lakes

Hi All,

I was up north a couple of weeks ago walking in the lake district. I was quite pleased with the set of shots that resulted. I've not shared more that the odd photo here, so I thought I'd post a link to the set and maybe get a little feedback. Constructive criticism is welcome 🙂

The photos were all taken with a Nikon F100 or Leica M6. The film was a mixture of Tri-X and Rollei Retro 80s. All developed in HC110.

Well, you asked for feedback, so I'll give it a go!

Interesting set - I like the way you've been to some of the touristy spots eg Derwentwater but avoided the obvious shots eg shot 9 - I've been round Strandshag Bay times trying to get a decent shot of those roots, and failed every time!

No 6 I love, despite or possibly because of the blocked-up tree trunks, and there's a moody one of Blencathra I love as well. On the other hand, quite a few look very heavy and dark to me - number one, for example, and seven and ten, and not in a good way - grimy rather than moody.

I don't really feel qualified to say much more, but I think you've done them more justice than I've ever managed, and I hope you enjoyed yourself getting them. You certainly picked some good routes! Hope you've saved some scenery for when I'm up there in a month's time.

It's hard to avoid the picturesque up there and I'm glad you seem to feel i have succeeded in that regard.

Sometimes there is a bleakness up in the fells which I have tried to capture, but there is a fine line between dark and too dark! I am sometimes guilty of having my screen turned up too bright too, so that may effect how they show to others. But I certainly take the point there.

It is very beautiful indeed up there. I hope you get less rain than we did 🙂

I rather like the "grimy" look to these. Lots of good sky too. My favorite is #9, the tree roots.

There's a good variety of photos, and of course they're not all going to please everyone. I think the majority of them are great, and the ones I don't? Well, someone else will, so to each their own.

My favorite is the one with the fence/rock wall in the foreground, with the mountain peak in the distance illuminated by the low sun, with the rest of it in shadow.

And since I never made it to the Lakes Region during my short stay so many years ago, these don't look touristy to me at all.

Lake D is not easy to shoot imho but you have a few nice ones here.
I liked shot 6 which could be very ordinary but is rescued by the composition and the background. Some of the hill shots are very nicely exposed.

I like the feel of these images, like others have said here. I especially like the one with the serpentine rock wall in the foreground.

Regarding image quality, I'd try to keep the moodiness by holding the highlights as they are, but try to bring out more detail in the shadows so that they don't looked simply blocked up.

On my doorstep so I`m very familiar with the area.
I like these , especially the fell shots.
You`ve avoided the tourist stuff and successfully , in my opinion, conveyed the mood of the place very well.

@Jamie - Looking on another computer i think you're right that the shadows may benefit from being a bit more detailed. I think i've been working with my monitor a bit bright!

@Michael - Thank you. I was trying hard to convey the beauty of the place through the mood rather than a picture postcard way. I'm please to hear from a local that I did a good job 🙂
