New T-MAX 400 first photos

I'm posting some samples of the first shots I took with the new T-MAX 400 that I just finished scanning. The film is really finer grain for a 400.
What are you guys using as a developer?
I used rodinal 1+50 (the new concentrate, that I don't know if it is exactly the same as before)...
The light conditions where not good for a 400 film - to much sun and light in lisbon yesterday. Most of the shots where at f11 and f16, but the latitude of the film seems great.

Nice to hear about the new T-Max 400. I may have to try some and leave my tri-x at home for a few days.

I just developed a roll of the new T-Max 100 in D-76 1-1 and made some prints last night. I can tell you that under a 10X grain focusing aid, the grain is a bit tighter than the previous T-Max 100 in D-76 1-1. Time to make some large prints 🙂

I have developed it twice in HC-110h, it is finer grained than the old. But I think that is it really pretty much the same as before. So if you liked the old TMY you will like 400TMY-2. Here is one from my first roll:

Great image! I really like the sharpness and the glowing highlights around the periphery of the tree. What lens did you use?

I can use the same equipment & film. Not with the same results. But trying is half the fun.

Ok Ive shot a ton of this already, and I find that the best results I have got from it have been when I rate it between 250 and 320 and dev it in Rodinal 1+50 for about 11'00" in 20c.
Going by the book and developing it at 20c for whatever time in Xtol and 400 iso was just terrible!!! Clumpy and darker grays immediately vanished into black...
I originally bought 5 100' rolls of it, I used two and sold the rest bar one. I guess its just not where I want to be at until I have to because there is nothing else left...
Maybe Ill try it out again with a few different developers -anyone tried it with DIAFINE yet?

Nice pics Joao. Good luck with the new combo. I have not tried it yet as I am getting pleasantly re-aquainted with Neopan 400 @ Ei200 in Rodinal 1:50.

irq506 I'm pre-soaking the film for about 1.5 min. and removing a bit in developing time (9min 1/2 rated EI320). The highlights hang really fine before they blow out.

Hi John, I'm loving rodinal because of the contrast (very light and very dark areas) and sharpness. And I think this film with rodinal is great for subjects like portraits taken with larger apertures...

I tried couple of rolls (35mm) in DDX. Very sharp and fine grained. It has a different tonal feel from Tri-X, my staple. But I like its sharpness and fine grain. So I'm ordering a long roll.

I'm surprised to hear that it works in Rodinal. My previous experience was that 400 iso T-grain films are terrible in Rodinal. The worst I saw was Delta 400 in Rodinal. The grains were not only huge but ugly too. At the same time tonal range is flat. But the 100 iso TMAX in Rodinal was great, if you get the exposure right, that is. Touchy stuff. So I've given up on T-grain for a long time, until this new TMY-2.

DDX seems much more agreeable to T-grain films. From the two rolls I tried, one at 400 and one at 800, the new TMY-2 is gorgeous at 400 in DDX. At 800, it looks OK. I think if you want to shoot at 400, TMY-2 is great. If you want to push, Tri-X is still better.

The tonal range in Rodinal is poorer, but I enjoy so much the "signature" that it leaves and the grain in out of focus spaces (when it doesn't grow to much)... I think is a matter of subject - for landscaped probably this combo will not work at all.

I have some DD-X at home (that's the only thing I use for delta 100 in 120) and have to give it a try!

What times and dilution did you use? I have some DDX left and would like to try that soup.

I tried the new T-MAX 400 in Clayton F76+ at EI 400 and got excellent results, fine grained and sharp. However, I don't think it creates the same "atmosphere" as Tri-X -- I don't know exactly what is missing but I know it is not there! I have 6 more rolls to go and would experiment more before making a final conclusion.

My DDX time was 7.5 min 68F 1+4 dilution for TMY-2 iso 400. Although the detail was excellent, but the negative looks thin. I think 8 min or 8.5 min could be better.

BTW, what's your time for F76+ @400 1+9 dilution? I also have F76+ and would like to try.
